This will be my first winter with my CRD. Bought a pad style oil pan heater to augment the block heater. My question is, can I put this style of heater on rippled oil pan of the CRD? The instructions say it has to be mounted on a flat surface, but thats impossible on our pans. I've done a thread search and see that several CRD's on this forum are running pad style heaters. Any input would be appreciated.

Remove the skid plate and there is a small flat surface on the very bottom of the pan, clean it well, stick it on and your good to go.

Unless your block heater is dead, you may not need this.

If you have a good battery, and plug your crd with the stock block heater, you wont have any problems,so no needs for that thing, ive seen -35c with mine, always starts, the oem block heater is strong enough beleive me.

The secret is having good synthetic oil, plug it,and let it idle a bit before leaving when its really cold, and dont forget fuel additive, you will never be stuck with that beast!

Stand on the corner of Portage and Main St. in mid Feb. You will change your mind.

I started mine a few years ago in Montana at -10 F and a fellow told me that I should shut it off because he didn't think I had oil pressure. I was too cold to explain to him about diesel knock and cold weather.

I would skip the pan heater and only use the block heater. I cheat on <20 degree nights by putting a 30 min timer on a battery charger. Big difference with a warm battery.

I'm sure a 30 min charge just before starting helps in bitter cold, but how much does it actually raise the temp of the battery?

I will have to measure battery temp increase this winter.

My experience is that cold cranking amps (CCA) is 30 second time sustained amps at 7.2 VDC at zero degree F.

I remember some formula that a battery at 35 degree F has lost 35% CCA capacity as compared to 70 degree F.

At zero degree F, battery has lost 65% CCA capacity as compared to 70 degree F.

I just want the battery to have an internal temp rise to compensate for the CCA deduction for the temp difference

Years ago you could buy a battery wrap with a heater element to warm your battery.

I already had the battery charger and know batteries on charge warm up.

The 30 min battery charge makes a huge difference on my F350 7.3L Powerstroke diesel with factory installed two batteries.
