I had some noise coming from the serpentine belt. When i was inspecting that issue, i noticed this: the a/c line that comes across the top of the radiator and goes to the accumulator (near the power steering res) was extremely cold and had condensation. -I checked inside the truck and the a/c was off. -I turned the ac switch on and saw the hose jump and i heard the compressor kick on. I am in work now and cant go look into this further until tonight, but my initial thought is that the compressor clutch is not fully disengaging. Anyone have any experience with this? On a side note, the serpentine belt noise was the alternator decoupler, which i replaced last weekend. Turning the tensioner is impossible with a breaker bar or ratchets. They come out too far from and bind with the fan blades or shrouds. I used an open end wrench with a pipe extension to get the leverage. |

What position was the vent selector in? The AC button isn't the only thing that turns on the AC, you know. |

turn the knob to OFF..if its on heat the A/c will run.. I think how the A/C works is a design flaw..why have the A/C switch but override the setting depending the selector knob? -dkenny |

our gasser AC compressor seems to run all the time no matter where the setting is. |

Sorry guys but most all of today's vehicles are setup this way, not that I particularly like it. I do not know if in this particular case the AC is running when it should not be or if it is only running when it should be running. There are 2 methods of dealing with this "helpful" feature that can be found at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=52364&p=585766&hilit=+switch#p585766 (kap's switch approach which is what I'd do if I was to do something) and a semi-perminant approach at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6042&p=180099&hilit=+switch#p180099 |

I think how the A/C works is a design flaw..why have the A/C switch but override the setting depending the selector knob? -dkenny Designed that way on purpose to ensure that your refrigerant, which happens to carry refrigerant oil, is circulated through your system every so often to ensure parts such as o-ring seals remain lubricated and do not dry out and leak. Not really the best solution. You would think they could have it run on start up for a minute and then shut off unless the a/c is turned on, but I am sure it was the bean counter approved solution. |

Actually it's a good thing for several reasons  First besides when the AC button is pressed it should only run in "Bi-Level", Heat or Heat/Defrost and Defrost  How many times do you get in with snow or rain on your shoes in the winter and soak the carpet that in turns causes the floor to rust? Having the AC run when heating directs dehumidified warm air to the floor drying the carpet. Is that a bad thing?  Next you get into your cold jeep along with your significant other on a cold day. The warm humid air you breath out fogs up the windows. The dehumidified air from the defroster dries the inside of the glass. As I remember cars have been this way since the late 1960's It used to be recommended to run the AC randomly in the winter to keep the compressor seal lubricated. Who remembered to do that on a regular basis. If you don't want the compressor running just select the vent position and direct them downwards
