so there i am looking to get my timing belt changed. I call a local dealer and tell them what im looking for, when they say "' you have a chain on that and it dosnt need to be changed until it starts making noise'' im disgusted and hang up. I may call around to other dealers to see what they say. |

Some dealers are clueless, look for a qualified diesel mechanic. Edmonton has plenty of good diesel mechanics, start searching for one in your area. It takes approximately 5 to 6 hours of labor and labor rates vary. Some of the parts can be procured from rockauto.com online (i.e. water pump $38.00) and other local auto parts stores at great savings. Racer |

Probably thought you had a gasser since they have timing chains. He may not of even know a diesel liberty exists. |

That RockAuto $38 price on a CRD water pump is legit BUT it's a A-1 CARDONE rebuild, ok, BUT you have to send your pump in to have it rebuilt with a 3-5 day turn around. Not too bad if someone on the forum has a spare pump to put into circulation. FYI a new pump is ca. $185 at Steve White Motors. |

yeah some dealers are clueless I asked one for a price on a thermostat and got "there is no diesel Liberty" you have to call a different dealer |

That made you lose faith in Chrysler?  Go back to the first bailout under Lee Iacocca, the Daimler debacle, the second bailout and the Fiat fiasco. Chrysler sucks balls. That being said, I love my Daimler conceived diesel 4-cylinder off road/commuter. |

My first Chrysler was a 1986 Dodge Shelby OMNI GLHS turbo, 1988 reliant, a 1995 Dodge CTD, 2003 PT cruiser turbo. They all had there flaws but they all had personality. Traded the PT in on the Liberty CRD. CRD has personality especially running on free fuel! PT cruiser was one of two new cars I ever purchased. I am going to stick with used cars. Mostly diesels. I have had ten diesels since 2000 the Jeep CRD is by far the best. |

I'm sticking with "DIESEL", not Chrysler....VM motori biggest flaws is parts cost+avalaibility and over head one piece intake valve cover aluminium design, sleeves is a nice feature on small car/truck diesel engine but to get a advantage over normal bored engine you need to use wet sleeves like in large (and expensive) heavy-duty diesel engines. Does a VM cylinders sleeves kit compare to Continental o-200 cylinders kit in price? I'm not sure but they are both fracking expensive.... Let's compare their logo then...   I loosing my faith on anything Chrysler try to sell me....I keep my faith in aftermarket engineering and backyard mechanics...They are the only reason we still enjoy our ride

I never had faith in any dealer. I have come to know a Chrysler dealer mechanic in a town of 20k. He knows me and can work on a CRD. He's a good mechanic. He is the single reason I go back. I've been on the TDI board lately (after a lapse of 7 or 8 years) and the VW dealers are the same. Dealers SELL cars. The service dept. makes money on oil changes and scheduled service. . . ALL of it way overpriced. There's really not much new in the world as viewed from where I'm sitting. |

Well got the work done at Londonderry Chrysler in Edmonton, and it does run fine (always did though). Ok you ready for this, the bill was $1950.00. Now that included timing belt, water pump, idlers. They made a mistake of replacing the tensioner without asking if i wanted it changed so that was thrown in for free; coolant, shop supplies, labour and GST. Labour was 6.5 hrs at $129.00 / hr. I did ask for my old parts back. The good news is that the belt looked like it had been sitting on a shel for a while, just dusty a bit. You could still read most of the original part number. No signs of wear or cracking what so ever. The idlers seem fine, but the tensioner if you spin it in your fingers has a little vibration. The water pump looks almost new, no play, and the gasket surfaces have no signs of seeping at all and no signs of leaking from the shaft either. The really interesting thing is the tensioner. On the front it has the small VM logo. But flip it over and it says "made in (wait for it) Canada. Who would a thunk it. Oh well. Here is to another 160,000 kms . Work completed at 165,000 km. |
