Hello, I am considering a CRD Liberty to replace my '06 F150. I want something that gets better fuel economy and is 4X4. I have owned several different CJ5's over the years and currently have a '71. I like the Jeep brand. Now for my question. I've found an '05 CRD at a dealership. It has 116,xxx miles. The dealer has no idea if the timing belt has ever been changed. Is there any way to tell? I can't afford to trade in my truck only to have to turn around and pay $750+ for repairs. Thanks, Matt |

I normally get around 27-28MPG with the GDE ECO tune. Great little 4x4, with 5,000lbs towing. As far as the timing belt I would plan on having to replace it. Most of the CRDs I have seen for sale around 100k have NOT had it done, Seems the owners traded them in rather than paying the $750 (or more). Keep an eye out, while there aren't many CRDs for sale they randomly show up and you should be able to get a good deal. I bought my 05 this spring and had 27k and 26 months left on the warranty. Thanks, Matt Without pulling the timing belt cover you cannot tell. What part of the country are you in and do you have a link to the vehicle you are looking at? How much are they asking? |

I am a competent mechanic and would have no real trouble doing the work. The cost of parts and finding the time to do it are a turn off. On the other hand I would know exactly what I had at that point. Thanks for your help! |

Assuming you are doing your own work the cost of parts may not get anywhere near $750 depending on what you choose to or have to do. For example if your temp gauge when warmed up reads vertical or one needle width left of vertical then there is no need to replace the tstat. If the bearings on your water pump, 2 idler pulleys, tensioner, and such are not weeping grease, are solid, and spin freely and there is no sign of water pump leakage then you can probably get away with just replacing the timing belt and serpentine belt. In which case you can get Gates belts-serpentine #K061130 & timing T336 from Amazon at ca. $40 and $75 respectively or any decent parts store so even if you rent the GDE timing belt tools you would be well under $200. If you do not have to do the water pump it's an easy weekend job if you are new to the job and take your time or can be done in about 6hrs if you know what you are doing. I'm not volunteering him to help, don't know what his schedule is like, or suggesting a fee if he does but geordi is not that far away (north of Savannah) and he has done at least 2 belts including the one on lgoodbar's CRD that I helped out on about 3 weeks ago and geordi does have the Miller tools. |

Did you look at the carfax ? Because it maybe on it. They had wipers and headlights on my carfax. |

Or tell them that you will but it if they either have it changed at a dealer, or at least supply you with the necessary parts so you can change it yourself. |

I'm seriously thinking of selling mine or trading for a Wrangler. Mine is a Limited CRD with 94000 miles. NAV system with dual heated leather seats and 6 disc changer. No major mods and runs fine. thinking of $12,000. Driven it for 3 years with no major problems. |
