My '05 CRD is nearing the the 100,000 mile mark and I have toyed with buying the tooling to complete the timing belt repair versus have the Jeep dealer do this.

I had a delivery truck in my shop this week, I am in the steel fab business, and the driver commented on my diesel. I shared with him the issues that are common the our vehicles, etc.
Anyway, I mentioned the timing belt, etc. He was familiar with it, etc. I started picking his brain as to needing a non-dealership shop price the repair. He said I'll call later in the week with a number.
Today I get the call with the number of the garage.

Well I am talking to this guy. Picking testing his knowledge about the engine and he starts off in saying the engine is built is Australia??? I said, excuse me? Playing dumb I said I thought VM Motori's where built in Italy? No, he said, everyone runs diesels in Australia.... anyway. I didn't push the subject. He's done six belt change outs. I asked about the water pump switch out. He said he doesn't change the pump with belt????? I found this odd?

I asked about price? His number included OEM belt was $600.00. He needs the car for 4 days. This a Jeep shop, they work primarily on gas machines obviously but having done 6 of these VM's caught my eye.

His saying the engine is built in OZ versus Italy does raise my eye though.

What say you LJ members?

and I doubt that any self respecting Australians would give their company an Italian name..... the accent's are just all wrong......

if he's done 6 belt changes - would any of those 6 owners be willing to talk to you about the service?

ATXKJ,

I will ask the tech for references. Excellent question.

Thank you,

Tom

Well, knowing where the engine was actually assembled aside, doing a timing belt properly and well isn't rocket science. It DOES require somebody willing to read "the instructions" and generally knowledgeable about mechanicsals in general and diesels in particular. When I had the blown head gasket, the shop I chose to do the work was a non-dealer BMW/Mercedes shop, whose owner is a diesel wrench, with an MB 300D of his own. He said that they'd never seen one of these, but they did a good job.
