The cost was $750. The time the Jeep was down was 6 days for the mail out/return of the computers. Removal was pretty easy. for the TCM, I removed the air box first, then the vac assembly was swung to the side after you pull the 2 base screws. The ECM was best removed once the battery was out. This gives you the room to push the huge wire harness cord out of the way for a no cursing bottom nut on the braket removal. Realy a peice of cake job to get both out in this way. The jeep started up normaly and did in fact have slightly less clatter. The ORM cel light went out in a few seconds as the MAF was now pluged it. A slight power increase is noticable at WOT with the ECO tuned ECM. But the real change is how this trany works! I can now hold OD lock up down to 51-52mph and accelerate moderately with out loosing my OD LU !! This is exactly what I was after. Even 4th holds lock up without the free wheeling TC on either side of 4th down to 1500 rpms easy. I must add, I luged this thing at the edge of gear change numerous times, searching for the slightest hint of vibration torqing of the drive train..... nothing. The gear releases were clean, lock ups smooth, gear hunting was not found (no trailer). I cant find a single issue with this TCM tune. Zip...nada. Id like to thank Keith at GDE for having the tech know how in fixing these all important drivability issues. GDE makes this CRD worth owning. Now, the new dream is CRD #2 with the 4X4 converted to 2 wd! If that gets close to ALH/TDI MPG territory.... That would put a V-dub up for sale ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Forget your dream of getting CRD #2 into TDI territory ![]() That is unless you put the CRD on a BIG diet and loose half of it's 4200 pounds, change the brick shape into an arrow and lower it a foot at least ![]() Besides who wants a 2x4 jeep ![]() I've had mine since May 2006 and finally just last week got my first 30 MPG highway tank. It was 30.1 ![]() ![]() The top MPG on my last TDI, a 1999.5 Jetta was 70 and 72 on two consecutive tanks. Overall average for 114k total miles was 49.6 mpg and I have a heavy foot ![]() |

Once you loose about 4-500lbs of 4wd hardware out from under a Liberty and the extra rolling resistance of the front CV's, I think hi 30's hiway IS doable. And thats damb close to what my TDI autos get hiway. The lower city is where the extra wieght would be evident. But all in all, the CRD fits me more comfortably than any of my TDI's including the 05 Passat pump duce I sold. The auto tranies on the TDI's are known to be weak and are a $4000 fix to replace. The Jeep unit appears to be a more durable unit. here again, another upgrade. Back when I was a kid, NO ONE had a 4x4 unless you plowed snow or had a hunting rig. 2 wheel drive trucks were like SUV's today and thats in the snowy upstate NY region! So who would want a 2wd liberty CRD with better yet milage?, me and all those folks that bought 2wd gasers ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

No it's not a canadian unit ![]() ![]() Yes I know many people don't see that kind of mileage but I did ![]() ![]() My 96 Passat tdi wagon averaged just over 45 mpg for 107k MILES and the 99.5 mark 4 jetta, ALH engine, averaged 49.6 for 114k MILES. Granted it was mostly highway on both and It was for work so the speed limit was observed most of the time ![]() Those two tanks were under perfectly ideal conditions. Good fuel bought in southern states, (closer to the refinery?) on a cool humid night, no AC, lots of moisture in the air, cruise control set for 65 mph that is actually lower then 65, 20k on the odometer that means it was broken in but the intake had not started clogging, tire pressure was the max printed on the tires, no traffic and the wife was asleep and I only had to stop for fuel ![]() My son owns it now and he has Jeff's stage 2 Rocket tune and routiley gets in the low 60's on return trips from Michigan with fuel bought close to a refinery in Northern Ohio. If you've ever driven in Michigan you know the posted limit is the slowest your allowed to drive on the berm ![]() The biggest thing is good fuel! and keeping your foot out of the skinny pedal is a close second ![]() And I did post my figures on Fred's, check my profile there, but was ignored as those getting around 40 mpg just didn't think it was possible ![]() ![]() I've owned and driven around 10 or so 1985 to 1991 non tdi VW diesel's over the years including a EcoDiesel all used and some over 200k and one over 250k miles and they all averaged close to 50 mpg for me. |
