This is the second time in 1 month where I go to start my truck and after approx 5 seconds it shuts off, this time around I knew what to do, bleed the fuel system. But now this is my question, there has to be something wrong somewhere to allow air to be getting into the system, in the 6 years I've owned my crd this has never happened.

Any input, thank you in advance

Do you still have the 1s gen fuel filter head? See Sams NOOB fuel head bleeding guide for toward the end for the 2 gen head picture. If you have 1s gen head replace it.

I was wondering if that was the problem, I was told there is a newer version of the fuel filter head from jeep. The parts man at jeep wanted to sell me one the last time I bought a fuel filter

FYI that new head comes with a filter and WIF sensor installed but you do need the new wiring pigtail too.

The new style fuel head is not the Holy Grail for air in the fuel problems. It’s a victim of another problem. The plug for the fuel heater melts because of excessive air build up in the fuel head. Some air is natural but the 05/06 CRD’s have a fuel system from the tank to filter head designed for the gasoline version that has a fuel pump in the tank and is therefore under pressure. Ours is under a vacuum and prone to leaking.
So the filter head is a victim of a fuel system not designed for a vacuum application.

So yes your current problem might be a melted plug on the filter head but the real problem is the large amount of air getting in. Our CRDs have all the control circuitry, fuse, relay and wiring for a lift pump right up to a plug under the back seat. Many have finished the job Chrysler started by installing some type of lift pump.

This topic has been at the fore front since I joined LOST in mid 2006 second only to torque converter failures. Nothing new here. I’ve had an in tank lift pump for around 5 years and still have my original filter head. My CRD had symptoms of air in the fuel within one mile of the dealership the day I bought it new with drivability problems. Of course the dealer “could not duplicate” the problem and I was on my own. Some member’s dealers knew what the problem was and replaced the fuel lines from the tank that have plastic fittings with “o” ring seals from the tank.

This problem tends to show up this time of the year because most of us are experiencing lower temperatures causing thicker harder to pump fuel.

Joe has a point but I'd still upgrade to a 2n gen head. If the problem persists move on to lift pump (in line or in tank - see forum chat) and maybe replace quick disconnect fuel fittings.
