greetings all, just a quick question. i did the elepant mod about a year ago, and while i should be paying more attention to the oil level between changes, i always just assume everything is fine. well, checked the oil today and was a quart and a half low after 3500 miles on an oil change. never experienced oil loss before the mod, and no signs of leakage elsewhere. any ideas? thanks |

If you dont find any oil spots on the ground, and you dont see more smoke than usual, you might have the too long dipstick syndrom, wich many of us have experience. On many crd s the oil dipstick is a bit to long, and that make us putting to much oil, mine had that problem,it would burn like 1/4 of a quart every time i changed the oil, then settle on that mark and never burn anymore,so might be your problem. Of course it may be something else, but i would start by trying to find a leak somewhere, smoke, anything. If you cant find anything wrong, well you got your answer! |

thanks for the reply. no oil on the ground. haven't seen another crd with the mod to know whether mine is normal, but seems consistent with what other's are reporting. i really need to check the dipstick after a fresh oil change to see where it comes up to exactly. probably the dipstick issue here. thanks again! |

Regardless of dipstick the proper fill amounts appear to be 6.3 qts with stock filter and 7 qts with oversize filter wherever that puts you on your dipstick. Remember the VM motor oil passages are small so drain back to get a true oil level reading may be somewhat longer than the traditional 5 minutes. |

thanks also, i guess it was just disconcerting when i added proper amt. during last oil change, but there was only about a quarter of an inch of oil on the bottom of dipstick when i checked it last (3500 miles since oil change) i added a quart, let it drain for 30 min, and it was still about a quarter inch below bottom marker on dipstick. |

If I fill any more than about 1/3 on dip stick, oil is pushed out somewhere. Used to be CCV Puck, then EHM blew it out, now any excess its trapped in provent drain. I really need to stop overfilling mine. |

I just found this thread after I went looking for an answer to this myself. I did the EHM right after I bought the Jeep (in July) and am now due for an oil change. But I seem to be losing quite a bit of oil through the EHM. I guess after this next oil change I will have to carefully monitor the oil level to see how fast it's dropping. Is it possible that a bad CCV could cause excessive oil loss? Doesn't the valve serve to let the gasses go by while keeping in a majority of the oil? |
