My 05 has 55k miles and not sure if I should proactively have the original ceramic gloe plugs changed. I live in the DC area so it does not drop into the single digit temps often. I do not want the ceramic ones to break apart and cause cylinder damage. Thoughts?

Ca. 42K miles but doubt glow plugs get much wear down here. Was planning on installing the 2n gen OEM but that's on hold pending the outcome of the Etecno1 7v metal replacements currently being tested by a variety of forum members.

Any CRD owner contemplating switching from the original 7v Bosch ceramic glo plugs to 5v ones should first research the problems VW TDI owners had/have when they went that route :dizzy:
Google turned up this one and remember VW is still activly selling diesels and is providing support in the US :jester:
http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/glow ... PD-TDI.htm

The 7 volt metal ones announced here:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62346&p=690028&hilit=testers+wanted+glow+plugs#p690028
are being tested by some members look like a drop in replacement for the original ceramic ones. They do not require a reflash or changing the control module.

If the past support or lack of from Chrysler's and their fixes (f37) for CRD problems is any indication you should beware :dead:

My first one failed after 1 year and 15,000km and I still have one original after 5 years and 110,000km. The other 2 have failed in between. What I take from this is that their lifespan is unpredictable and they can fail at any time.

Your original plugs may fail tomorrow or they may last another 55k but then so may new replacements. Replacing a working plug, which may last the lifetime of the vehicle anyway, runs the risk of seizure or breakage.

I would just replace them as they fail and hopefully if/when they do fail there will be a better option available e.g. Etecno1.

My 2002 2.5 CRD still has the original glow plugs at about 95,000 miles but I live in a warm climate so the glow plugs do not do much work. :)

Replaced mine at 90000 kms only because I'm a tester for the Etecno ones. Stock ones were still good. Glow Plugs are like lite bulbs. Some last long and others fail in short order. You never know....

As for Etecno they advised me last week they are making some minor changes and going ahead with production. I cannot answer for them when they will be available but assume it will be by end of year or so.

I guess this is what they are referring to here: http://www.etecno1.it/diesel-glow-plugs-n-14.html

I wonder how/if they intend to distribute in NA or are we going to have to get them shipped from Europe.

Since they came to LOST in search of US/Canada testers it's a safe assumption we will be able to get them one way or another. I know GDE was testing and perhaps they will distribute, just hinting, as there should be a decent if small market over here.

One ceramic went bad and I got a replacement set before they became not available. When Etecno gets theirs up for sale, I will buy two sets.
The Chrysler 5Volt fix sounds too much like the VW TDI PD 5 volt fix that failed badly.

I have a sport with 100k miles and 5v plugs and a limited with 74k miles and stock ceramic plugs.... I don't see any differences at start, I would put in the etno1s to the limited though when they become available.

Other than connecting a tester how do you know you've got failed plugs?

The 5v glow plugs work great for me. No more spitting out number one and missing at idle. You can dismiss the VW problems coming to us.

My first failed at 67,000 Miles, Jeep lived its life in Indiana and Wisconsin. The plugs saw a lot of use there and we have even had a few times where the plugs were not sufficient to fire it up so we had to wait the block heater to do its job. Im going to replace all 4 at the same time with these as soon as they are available.

as far as I know..
bought used with 36K miles..
I've never messed with them..

I'm planning on tweaking the setup to use the newer 5v without the ECM update.
I don't want to take it to the dealer.

-dkenny

its been running great since the SEGR and the inline thermostat.

Why waste your time and money with the 5Volts when the new 7 volts are going to be available soon: http://www.etecno1.it/diesel-glow-plug- ... -1562.html

I just posted a new topic regarding a bulk order as I received a response from Christano at Etecno1 this morning on ordering options.

Thanks everyone for taking the poll. It is clear that there is no need to pro-actively replace the original GPs and they are lasting longer than I had orginally thought. It is also good to know that Papaindigo is working with GDE to get Etechno1 drop-in replacements for the US market. It is good to know there is a KJ CRD community out there to look to for support.
