Post subject:  Timing Belt Witness Mark Question

Hello, I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty 2.8 CRD, I am replacing the timing belt but I don't where the witness mark on the crankshaft is? Can anyone tell me where exactly? I used to have a diagram from the dealer but I can't find it. Thank you.

The witness marks on the camshaft gears are useless. You need to use the alignment pins from the side of the valve/camshaft cover in order to know when they are aling or make some marks of your own before you take the belt off.

I know that but I need to know which position for the crank.

There is no witness mark on the crankshaft, add one on before you remove the belt.

Also welcome to the forum, make sure to read the noob guide, it has helpful information specifically related to doing the timing belt.

You will need to rotate the engine by hand to the point where both camshaft pins will twist into their locations, THEN the crankshaft is properly positioned. Make your witness mark, and remember that the proper setting will have the 4 bolt holes of the crankshaft in a 3/6/9/12 clock position.

Final validation can be made with a long 6mm hex key, there is a hole on the passenger side of the bell housing at approximately the 7:30/8 clock position, as if viewed from the front bumper.

When putting the key in that hole, tap around with the key at an angle, to verify that ONLY a small hole in the flywheel is present. The key should find that hole center when horizontal. If you can't validate that the hole is only a small one... You have the crank in the wrong position, and there is NO WAY that the cam pins locked in either. Try again.

The front of the crankshaft hub should have a mark at TDC. This is located inside where the harmonic damper attaches to front of crank. The timing mark should be pointing at the 3 o'clock position when the cams are properly aligned with the alignment pins. We have a write up on the timing belt replacement on our forum that shows a picture of the crank timing mark.
