Post subject:  Check Engine Light ON but scanners repeatedly read 'NO CODE'

I am the proud owner of a 2006 KJCRD that just turned 90000 miles
For the last 19 months however my check engine light has been on
I have had four different plugged scanners into it and each has said "No Code," "No Trouble Code," or "Cannot Communicate"
Every mechanic I've taken it to has recommended I take it to some one else
The car has been running fine but I need to get the light turned off before I can pass my inspection
Any body have any clever ideas?
:banghead:

Before throwing you on the questionable mercy of a Jeep dealer, who will likely charge 1 hr labor for 10 minutes of work, where are you located? Perhaps there is a nearby member with a scanner such as the GDE one that might could read the code.

I am located in Northern California, Sonoma County (Rohnert Park specifically, Santa Rosa is the nearest big city)
I went to the Jeep stealership today and they turned me away before even running the diagnostic.
They said that since the KJ CRD doesn't meet CA emissions standards they don't have anyone in their shop that can work on them,
they directed me to Santa Rosa Diesel www.srdiesel.com
SR diesel wasn't available to meet me today so I thought I'd try the forum before scheduling a potentially expensive appointment.

Has the original transmission cooler filter been replaced with the correct one?

They broke the OBDII port at one point in 2006 and it wasn't working with aftermarket scan tools. This was fixed later under the guise of the F31 recall. Check your vehicle doesn't fall into this category. The dealer you went to should have at least validated that your recall history was up to date!

You can check your recall history status on the Jeep web site using your VIN #. As to the dealer comment that's BS; perhaps they lack a technician trained to work on CRD specific things like the motor and fuel system but I know darn well they can work on all the other systems like brakes, transmission, etc and that includes plugging a code reader into the diagnostic port and pulling the codes.

If Santa Rosa Diesel doesn't have a compatable code reader you may have to elevate the conversation at your local Jeep dealer at least above the level of a "ticket" writer as opposed to driving to Nevada or maybe there is a member in the area with a reader.

I just checked the recall history on my KJ CRD and I appear to be up to date
I will share the nature of the problem once I have a chance to take it to SR diesel or back to the stealership

You know, I had a similar behavior with my 2006 CRD - the check engine lamp was ON due to my ORM disconnect, but my simple code reader always claimed no fault. I obtained another, (OTC 3108 PocketScan) which also would read something like "no code" or "cannot communicate" - except - about one out of every ten attempts, it would work correctly, and allow scrolling through a list of readouts!

I could never figure out what magic sequence worked (key on first, key on after scanner plugin, engine run/not run, phase of the moon...) but repeated tries would give me a good code readout. Who knows what's going on with that bus?

croatanpathfinder - forgot to mention. Don't overlook the timing belt change that needs to be done at 100k. Lots of DIY writeups available and you can rent tools from GDE. I've helped on one and other than the difficulty in getting the fan/fan shroud off the job is pretty easy just take it slow and mark everything so you know pre and post positions are the same. Working with geordi we did lgoodbar's TB in about 1/2 a day not counting the extra 1.5 hr or so run to the parts store for a helicoil to replace the TB tensioner bolt OEM helicoil that backed out.
