The hotter the better, if I could research the proper one, I'd be running a 203*F like they are doing on the VW Tdi's. You get better engine performance with a little hotter diesel engine.

I put the Stant in yesterday. With 5 heat cycles so far its perfect. No jumps. FYI...there are two interchangeable thermos Stant 13519 and Gates 33109. The gates is more pointed (original Post installed a Gates) The Stant has a small ball valve toggle. Break off the toggle and that gives you a 1/8 inch hole. It is labled hole on top. The stat has a small lip, but do not think it will affect the hose or cause any down the road issues. But will watch.

I drove Up to PSU over the mountans Yesterday. At 70 to 80 MPH the temp was at 12 oclock the hole time and ran perfect.

I installed the Stant 13519 a couple of weeks ago. Been on a 1 day 450+ mile highway trip. No problems.

I have had the Stant in mine for nearly 30K miles. It has been fine. I intend, however, to replace the original thermostat when I do the timing belt.

the in hose stat works as long as your not towing heavy in hot weather.

Reguardless of what stat you have your temp may go up towing in hot weather. If the air is on the temp will be higher.

After I put a hotter tstat in one of my jeeps and it over heated a few times in the summer, I thought, we have engines that were engineered at a certain temp at the factory, do I really want to take a chance warping the cyl head to stay a little warmer, and MAYBE?? increase my fuel mileage a miniscule amount? Would all these fuel savings pay to repair my engine? No, I put an OE stat in as it was actually a lot cheaper. :wink:

After doing the GDE Full torque Eco tune my Jeep CRD seemed to take even longer to heat up even then at best it would only run between 1/4 and 1/2 like most CRDs on the temperature gauge. I recently did the TB change which included changing the Thermostat. Now it heats up quickly and the temp gauge registers at half or about 216F without any additional modifications.

Naturaly if you put a hotter thermostat in your asking for trouble. But if your OEM one has failed open like most do. Installing a inline one at the correct temp should have no problem with overheating. My CRD is operating at perfect temp since installing the 195 stant. I just dont want to keep installing new OEM one's every few years. If i see any temp over 1/2 I will pull it out and replace with OEM. Untill then i like how it is working.

This is a pretty stupid response, considering we're talking about a DIESEL ENGINE here. Diesels inherently run cold. Most diesels run hotter thermostats than gas engines.

Putting a hotter T-stat in a gas engine is not a well informed idea.

Been there, done that, an infrared thermometer, clearly showed the temp was high on the tstat inlet, and low on the outlet. Radiator was relatively cool.

So since my inline install i have had absolutely NO spikes or problems AT ALL. Although right now im running on the winter fuel so my mileage has not really increased since the install. So running autobahn at aprox 80-85mph i get a pretty consistant 23-24mpg. Thats with some small slopes and passing cars and such. Unfortunately i havent tore into my non working cruise control yet so i dont have that option. But so far no noticeable changes to mileage. I do like the fact that my heater really kicks some butt now though!

I did the inline mod about 1-1/2 years ago using the machined housing from Amazon.com...same principal. I originally drilled the hole but when colder weather set in the temperature took much longer to come up and would drop significantly especially when idling for a few minutes. I plugged the hole and all was well...and no temperature spikes. I recently did my timing belt and flushed the cooling system. For the flush I removed the tstat from the housing for immediate coolant circulation. Drained coolant, refilled with water, idled for about 5 minutes and drained...twice, installed a flush, refilled with water, let run for about 15 minutes then filled and drained 3 more times before installing the tstat back in the housing and adding fresh coolant. Didn't have any air pockets. Just be sure to open the purge valve on the left top of the radiator when filling.
