Post subject:  Throttle Control warning light, cruise kicks off...

Have noticed a couple of issues I think are related...

I drive to the office, about an hour and a half away, twice a week. Sporadically, after driving for some time on the trip at around 60 mph for most of the way, if I have to stop at a light, etc., it seems as if the Libby won't accelerate and is bogged down from restart... won't go much more than 45 or 50 and doesn't want to shift right- accelerates VERY slow or strained. If I pull over, stop, shift into neutral, then back to drive, it takes off again just fine, usually without reoccurance for the trip, sometimes a couple of times. Definitely not consistent.

On what I think is a related issue, when cold outside, every now and then the throttle control warning light will flash, along with the fuel light, and the Libby will jerk and the fuel guage will drop a little and come back up- then continue on like nothing happened. If I'm on cruise it will kick it off. Today, with temps around 30 and windchill in the teens, it did it a bunch! Again, only when cold.

In both cases, no smoke, no consistent shuddering, no other warning lights... nothing.

I originally thought I had a tranny control module prob due to the acceleration issue and having had the F-37 done by the prior owner, but with the TC light issue I think may be related. Does this sound like an electronic issue, or maybe a fuel pump issue, or something else that I have not been able to find on this forum? Definitely feels/appears to be a fuel delivery issue of some sort. Any help in directing me would be appreciated. I have a couple of days on the road next week in the company truck and can get it serviced, but would like to be able to furnish the shop with a diagnosis if common.

Please help. Planning on GDE and TC upgrade very soon, but want to solve this issue first. Bought the Libby in July and love it so far, with exception of this/these bugs...

P.S. I have not checked codes as of yet... just looking for a preliminary opinion.... thanks. Dave

If you have the original red top battery the very first thing I'd do is get a new group 34 battery such as the Sears Platinum P1 (expensive but good warranty) or Interstate Megatron 85 (not quite as expensive and decent warranty).

Very hot/very cold with weird problems like this and an older battery often means the vehicle computer systems are unhappy with the power they are getting. Both stoutdog and I had fuel gauge problems that a new battery cured.

Brand new battery about a month or so ago... If I recall, it started to have the intermittent low power problem before it got cold, then, after I plugged it in overnight during a cold snap, this throttle control issue began. Any history of electrical probs relating to the block heater? I was thinking about having a reflash done to see if it clears the bug. Maybe the GDE will solve it...

A bunch of unrelated electrical gremlins like that sounds like chafed wires to me. Try checking some of the big wire bundles at the top of the engine and going behind the fuel filter head.

That is the place I would begin. I had some similar issues with electrical gremlins and found a wire chafed and grounding on the fuel filter mount myself. I was having intermittent power loss with the engine stalling from time to time accompanied by the electronic throttle control malfunction light, a check engine light and something with the ABS I believe. I would pull over and bleed the filter to have it cure it at times and finally realized it was only because I would disturb the wire bundle behind the fuel filter enough to keep the wire from grounding. I wish I would have known about the wire chafing problem beforehand. Would have saved me a headache. Good luck.

Do you brake with your left foot?

Thanks for the replies... I will check for grounds, especially near the filter. No, I do not brake left footed, although I wish it were a manual trans and I could use the lefty... he gets a little bored on the trip! Thanks much to everyone. I WILL get this solved as my wife bought me a lift for Christmas, I am ordering the TC, and going for the GDE upgrade soon... I am looking to push this LIbby as an everyday driver. I guess just because it's a great challenge and a great platform. I will post again if I find the culprit!
