Post subject:  Tougher Mopar torque converter
Does anyone know when the tougher torque converter came out for the CRD ? How about the part number for those of us who are computer search skills deficient ?

Suncoast is the toughest and can handle more HP&Torque than the most hopped up CRD can put to it. There are some variations made by other companies that are heavy duty HEMI converters that bolt up, but are not specifically designed for the CRD.
Some report the EURO (also current production for the newer 2.8L engine) which is now a rebuilt, can handle mid level tunes.
The EURO with the stronger dampener springs is what Chrysler should have put in from day one instead of the weak one that was original. The way Chrysler/FIAT is jacking up prices (like doubling them), the Suncoast will become a bargain in more ways than one.

I believe it was mid 2009 when the "Euro" TC came out. Last word I read is that it now comes up as the replacement for our CRD's. But if if your pushing for a free F37 (good luck) it specifies the older one.

I've been hunting a Euro TC for my 06, and I can't find ANY TC for this thing on ANY mopar parts website, including the mopar.com site. You can get a complete transmission on the sites, but not a simple TC.

The standard replacement TC is now what was referred to as the Euro spec - whether new or remanufactured, so that is what your dealer would get from Chrysler. I'd agree from all I've read and heard that the Suncoast is probably better and stronger, whether your engine (in whatever tune) actually needs that much strength is another issue!

The point about Chrysler pricing is a good one though. Being in England, I am fully used to paying a lot more than you guys for just about everything. If it came to getting another TC though (mine was replaced just over a year ago), the issue for me would be the price of a unit from Chrysler UK against the cost of importing a Suncoast - the unit cost might be ok, but the shipping and tax would double the price at the very least!

Rebuilt TC from http://www.torqueconverter1.com/Home.html and the Part # I used was the 68037142AA, Their part # is 600H, that list it for the 545RFE.they have a few rebuilt ones on hand for $125.00 + $20.00 shipping. 1 year warranty. Same day shipping, USPS received it 2nd day...

Euro specs, I was told they rebuild them to their specs, which is supposed to be better in their words.

68037142aa was the euro spec TC. Chrysler now only offers remans. Im assuming these are all the failed units that were swapped out during the recall and rebuilt to the euro spec. The new relabeled part # is RL037142aa. This is what i just got put in 2 months ago under warranty. During the first week it was in, i had 3 passengers and a trunk full of luggage. In 5th gear lockup, i approached a hill and it shuddered. The dealer diagnosed this as a wheel bearing (yeah...nice try). I got the GDE Hot tune a week ago, and i can now have it shudder any time while accelerating between 55 and 60 in lockup (even going down hill). I'll be taking the service tech for a ride for my next visit. The new TC's are crap. Pay the extra for a suncoast.

Sounds like they rebuilt an old unit with the old springs if it is shuddering. I am shocked that Chrysler made such an error. :roll:

A bad check valve in the front pump will make any torque converter chatter. Suncoast recommends replacing the check valve with either a Transgo or Sonnax.
