Post subject:  kj crd 2.5 vs xj 2.5 TD engine

i'm new here found tons of usefull info already but there's one thing i cant seem to find anywhere: is the 2.5 crd in the kj better regarding the cylinder head problems then the 2.5 td they sold in europe in the xj? (for those ppl knowing the engine.
both vm motori engines

been looking to buy my first "real" jeep and getting totally torn up between an 2001 xj and a 2003 KJ lol
biggest Pro for the XJ are a bigger booth
biggest pro for the KJ more comfortable as it probly wont see much off roading

this is not intended as one off the rants all over the web where this or that is better i just want to hear some personal experiences.

Also if u do the offroad mod on a 2.5 crd without variable turbo doesnt that affect the wastegate since i cant seem to find that also?

thx in advance

the xj 2.5 is a totally different engine, the newer KJ 2.5 is a much much better engine, the only thing it shares with the old engine is the displacement, nothing else is the same.

The offroad mod mentioned on the CRDs only applies to the newer USA 2.8 models with variable vane turbo.
The 2.5 CRD does not have a MAF before the airfilter to disconnect like the 2.8 CRDs have.
The 2.5 CRD use a vacumn solenoid to open the EGR....the ECU only checks that the solenoid is not open circuit or shorted...the ECU does not keep track of whether or not the EGR is actually opening/closing.
There is a basic mod for the 2.5 CRD to disable the EGR....simply block off one of the vacumn pipes(the outer one!) at the solenoid valve....screw a small self-tapping screw into the solenoid hole to block the vacumn.

See SAMs Noob guide above for more info. :)

i had already read the noob guide, i was just wondering if the turbo has a wastegate and if it idnt used in conjunction with the egr.

got a full history of the car now, it had some serious brake problems
left out the normor oil/filter changes
i guess most model problems are sorted on this one ?

156k km brake pedal bottoms out without braking :changed master brake cyl and abs pump again
149k rear brake disks
147k km changed master brake cyl and brake pads front
143k recall J17
120k handbrake pads
gasket front +rear axle
101k distribution +rear brake pads
83k condesor airco
80k recall F23
59k front +rear brake pads
10k recall C36, B30

Boot on the KJ is smaller than the XJ, but the vehicle is higher. It is more comfortable (much more headroom) and is actually very good offroad, as long as you make allowances for the relatively poor ground clearance - fitting OME suspension helps here. I gather that the unibody on the KJ is also a fair bit stronger on the KJ than on the XJ. The diesels (both 2.5 and 2.8 ) are a marked improvement over the engines fitted to the XJ as well. The XJ is a good vehicle, I just think that overall, the KJ is probably better.

I may be biased :D
