Hi,

Well, I seem to have a shudder problem and it seems to be getting worse. I have about 85,000 miles on the CRD and shudder happens when I am in highest gear at low RPM, say going 55 mph, and I hit a slope and press on the accelerator. Then it seems like the Jeep doesn't downshift right away and I go through a phase of shudder. Only by really kicking the gas pedal and forcing a downshift can I get rid of it. This weekend I towed the trailer (3,500 lbs.) and the shudder problem was way worse. Happened pretty much every time the conditions above were met.

Any idea what could cause this? I searched on the forum and seems the TC is the culprit but people's shudder experiences seem to happen at different conditions than mine.

As usual, thanks for the help.

Your experience is exactly how it happens. Get into 5th gear, watch the rpm's drop, you're in lockup. Drop your speed into the 50's, when you try to accelerate it shudders. The two options you have are the replacement unit from chrysler or suncoast

You can read my experience here. There is a link to another torque converter post there also.

Also an update on the replacement unit I got...it shuddered two weeks after it was installed. I still need to go back to the dealer and replicate it.

The reason is the dampener springs are too weak. They are upgraded in the "euro" TC and recent Suncoasts. We have towed a 5K trailer over 10K miles with no problem with the euro TC with the GDE HOT tune. BTW, if you tow 3500 lbs., you should get the GDE TCM "tow tune". It does not shift to 5th until 70 mph. Really helps up those 60 mph hills to be in 4rth instead of 5th.

I'd say TC as well - sounds exactly like the symptoms I had, and my TC was replaced with the "Euro" spec. In the short term - have you tried switching off the OD when entering a slope? it's a short term fix, but it can help stave off the day when a replacement is needed; you will need to replace it though, once you start to get the shuddering, and sooner is probably better than later.
