Do not send water pump to Rock Auto (Cardone) for rebuilding. Got mine back today and they will/did NOT rebuild it. Received an email from Rock Auto about it:
Hello,

Unfortunately Cardone was not able to rebuild the part that you sent in to them. It was shipped back to you and should arrive shortly. A refund has been set up for the cost of the rebuild minus their $5 testing fee. It will be issued within the next day or two and an email will be sent to confirm. I apologize that we were not able to repair this unit for you. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thank you for taking the time to write us. I spoke with a technician at Cardone, and it appears that your water pump could not be rebuilt because one or more of the "hard parts" (anything more than a gasket or seal) were missing or in need of being replaced. And because some or all of those components can't be manufactured from scratch by Cardone and aren't available from a third party, your "Return & Rebuild" could not be completed.

The success of a "Return & Rebuild" is entirely dependent on the state of the part that's sent in (if the core is in good condition it's easy to rebuild; if the core is in poor condition it may be more difficult, or impossible). Although your water pump was not in good enough condition to be rebuilt, other customers (with water pumps in slightly better condition) may find the "Return & Rebuild" service we offer to be successful. For that reason, we always advise customers that there's about a 20% chance that their part cannot be rebuilt (depending on its condition).

We apologize again that your water pump could not be rebuilt, but assure you that we'll be issuing you a refund within the next few days (and your pump is already on its way back to you).

The pump I sent back was a working pump and I wanted to get it rebuilt for the timing belt job.

Odd, there is not too much there to "rebuild". I wonder if it's worth a bit of push back on specifics as opposed on "one or more parts"; understanding that it was a working waterpump. I ask simply because I'm curious if it was something odd and specific to your pump or are they no longer doing CRD pump rebuilds for some specific reason.

I had the same thing happen to me but I didn't get the e-mail - pump just showed up on my doorstep w/ a sticker that said "cannot be rebuilt". It was a working pump. See: Water Pump backordered thread. If they can't do it take it off the freaking price list. So I'm out shipping in both directions and $5. I will not be ordering from Rock Auto again.

Carrying over from the backorder thread...

Hey grywlfbg,

Is that the water pump you shipped to the for repair? The one I got back today was not the I shipped to Cardone, this one is filthy! Did you sent the whole pump in or just the front half?

For what I can tell they sent the same pump back to me. They even included a picture of it in the box. I just sent the front half as all I expected them to replace was the bearing/seals and possibly the impeller. I would be really steamed if they sent me a different pump. I'll look at it more closely when I get home tonight.

I placed an order for an OEM one from MPA this morning and I didn't get en e-mail about it being backordered so I assume they are available.
