I was wondering how difficult it might be to install a manual transmission into the Liberty. Logically, if there are other vehicles that use the same 545RFE automatic transmission that also have a manual transmission as an option, it would seem to be relatively easy to fit one into a Liberty. Has anybody done this? |

second question - No first question - mechanically - tranny swap with pedals - a pain but no big deal - and then.... try to figure out how to get the computers to work..... European folks might be helpful it's kinda been done - Burnsville has put 2.8's in Wranglers with manuals - but they charge for their expertise........ |

The Stock Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch is very weak and likes to grenade if you do not detune the ECM. Most of the manual CRDs are 2.5L and the rest are detuned 2.8L. Read through the TDI forums and you will come to the conclusion that a dual mass flywheel is a crap design that can't even handle a stock TDI engine. My wife's dual mass flywheel in her stock TDI grenaded and I replaced it with a single mass flywheel clutch assembly that works great, so I am very bias. Lots of manual trans diesel pick up owners share my opinion of dual mass flywheels, they are junk. One member was having a heavy duty single mass flywheel clutch assembly made up but I have heard nothing in months. Your ECM will need to be swapped for a manual trans version unless a tuner can change it. Suncoast/Transgo is a cheaper option. |
