Does he know that you could call ECR in Maine and have them custom-build an ECR 110 with a rebuilt 300tdi crate engine for less than that?

Don't know much about Land Rovers but know enough to stay far away from them.

Before I bought the diesel Libby, I looked into buying an older aluminum, diesel Land Rover. I always thought that they have that "distinctive" feel.

The local forum (we actually have club here) directed me toward a member who showed me his truck. He said you really have to love them and I would do better with the Jeep.

I spent a bit of time in the army when I was (a lot) younger, and spent quite a lot of time in landys. I swear that the driving position was designed for someone 5'4 and with VERY short arms. I'm not huge (5'9) but I was incapable of driving one without banging my right elbow on the door every time I had to turn the wheel.

On the other hand they are robust, and - certainly the older 110/90, relatively easy to fix if something does break, and they are great for expedition work because of that. If you are spending any real time in the African bush/ overlanding - something WILL break and any decent bush mechanic can fix most things on them. Other than that, I generally find the seats uncomfortable, the cabin always seems to be draughty, and I've known them to leak. Don't get me started on the need for additional soundproofing. A friend and I drove about 400 miles in his 110 a few years back. At motorway speeds we had to speak loudly to communicate (an intercom might have helped - the sort used by rally drivers) and my hearing was distinctly muffled for a few days afterwards.

The advantage to them over here, is that parts and accessories are VERY easily available and fairly cheap; Jeep stuff costs a fortune.

Landrover along with Jaguar are now owned by Tata of India.
It would be funny if a "Breast Cancer Awareness" bumper sticker that is popular in the Southern US was stuck on the back of a Landrover or Jaguar.
The bumper sticker says, "I Love My TATAS".
That is one good use for a Landrover or Jaguar. :ROTFL:
The guy who wants $45,000 for his oldie might have the same bad habit (white powder) that killed Whitney Houston, and I am not referring to taking baths.
