Hey there...

I just brought my Liberty in for an inspection and it failed. They said the dash lites for the ABS, Traction Control and High Beams do not illumiunate and when in use. I know that the ABS works and the Traction Control work and the Hi-Beams work just the lites don't come on. They said that there was a short in the dash cluster and computer. Has anyone else have/had this problem or have/had heard of it before?

Any help would be welcome... They quoted me 3000.00 to fix it...

All the cluster lights should come on briefly when the ignition is turned ON and you can test the lights and gauges by holding down the odometer trip button as you switch on the ignition.

These are all LEDS soldered on the backplane and they may have blown or a previous owner/dealer may have pulled them off to hide existing problems.
Or you may have a faulty cluster or wiring problems.

Pull the cluster out and open it up and see if you can see any problems around the suspect LED positions.
The price they quoted you was probably for a new cluster...if you get one from a breaker make sure it is the exact same model....there is small lettering on the speedo face...mine is type 33 I think. :?

Let me guess, without knowing where you are, that you are in one of those wonderful locations where inspections are done by repair shops who, cynical me, of course have zero incentive to "discover" problems that only huge $ donations to them can fix.

X2 on the instrument cluster test. Get a copy of the 06 FSM from Sam's NOOB site (even if you have an 05 - 05 FSM lacks diesel cooling system info and general diagnostics but has illustration keys while 06 is the reverse) and look at the Instrument Cluster Self Test, (beginning on page 8J-65 and scattered thru various pages to 8J-87) which discusses what the test is supposed to do with respect to various lights and gauges on the dash. If the cluster passes all the test (e.g. lights and gauges all do the proper things) then the cluster itself is fine and you need to look at the general electrical system (possibly the BCM) for why those lights don't come on. If those lights fail to illuminate then X2 on pull the cluster (see FSM instructions, it's not that hard). The LEDs don't fail often but it is possible - more commonly somewhat less than honest folks will 1) put black electrical tape over CEL to hide an active CEL or 2) disable individual bulbs for who knows what reason.

$3,000 to repair is, politely, a total rip off assuming the problem is in the cluster not other wiring. The LEDs cost like $2.00 and any competent individual with a soldering gun can replace them (NOTE - lgoodbar has done so and if you email me I can send you his writeup which included replacing a smashed ABS LED). Simple bulb replacement done by a decent TV/radio/instrument repair place should cost like $100 or so total. Even if you need the entire cluster the online part price is ca. $4-500, install would take like 1 hour, and it might need a dealer flash for like $100. Even if you paid a dealer list for the part/install/flash the total cost should be under $1,000
