Post subject:  Gear lube behind front driveshaft??

Hey all,

I am in the process of replacing my torque converter and when I removed the front driveshaft I was surprised to find a whole bunch of fluid behind it. The end I removed was the end attached to the front diff and the fluid did seem like it was gear lube. The scent was not very strong so I am assuming the previous owner used synthetic gear lube. Anyway, has anyone run into this? I've never heard of something like this so I am wondering if the seal between my diff and front driveshaft is going out. Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks.

Yep, sounds like a bad pinion seal. My rear axle is doing the same.

Was this leaking to the ground?
Or on the large nut?

Mine did the same thing when I removed the drive shaft. I drove around for a week without the front drive shaft and nothing else leaked. I check the differential periodically and it is ok.

Happened to me too. A little weeping is not unusual. If it continues to pour out when the driveshaft is off I'd be concerned.

A differential seal is 16 bucks at the dealer and it is easy to replace. why wait? 16 bucks? one hour? come on.......

The seal doesn't seal the inside of the yoke.
There may even be a rubber o-ring on the outside of the CV that seals against the inside of the yoke.

the original complain was about oil at the driveshaft not the CV joint... That is why spending $16 and some 45 min is not a bad idea. Now if the problem is at the CV joint that is a different thing.

"I removed the front driveshaft I was surprised to find a whole bunch of fluid behind it"
I took it as behind the cv...the driveshaft would be even further from the seal Image
