$350 for TB job with water pump replacement.

Got this quote from a diesel shop near my house, they specialize in 18 wheelers and heavy machinery, they also work on pickups and the like. He admitted never have seen a liberty diesel. The guy told me he would do some research and call back, a few hours later he called and said they can do it for $350, I'll bring the parts...

Is that a reasonable price? Should I let this mechanics mess with my CRD?

If he is charging $70 per hour of shop time....sounds like it might be reasonable.

It sounds too good to be true to me.

Ask questions:

Is he using the proper tools?

Does he know about the fuel pump needing to be timed.

Replacing the water pump is tedious and takes up time .... is he going to replace it?

Etc.

Seems very good to me. I just did mine 1080. with out the water pump they were on national back order at the time. I'm still not sure they our in stock.
Will he fix it if he breaks it. Warranty his work.

I will inquire about those things, I did not know the fuel pump had to be timed... and, yes that quote is replacing the water pump.

This price does not include parts, I figure I'll spend about 600 in parts. And yes the water pumps are now available, I got mine on the mail today Mopar original replacement with the VM carved on it. Good point about the warranty, will ask.

I would be tempted to take a few of the relevant tech posts from here to him,
to make sure that the ins n outs (nuances) of our little gems are fully understood.
Sounds like a great price compared to some horror stories I have heard of.
If he understands the game fully I would be tempted to let him play it.

No he shouldn't have to warranty his labour to replace bad parts but if he screws up the timing and sacrifices the rockers, for example, he should cover the cost of fixing it.

At the risk of starting a long debate the fuel pump does not need to be "timed" in a normal TB job where you are starting with a running engine that is in time. It just should be witness marked and not moved, same goes for crank and cams, after the cam and flywheel pins are in. Of course there is supposed to be (I've seen pictures but not actually seen it) a notch on the FP pulley that lines up with a mark on the TB back cover at a certain point in the engine rotation (IIRC every 3rd full engine revolution). If you want to line up that mark to use as a witness mark there is no harm in doing so. Whether or not the FP needs to be timed if you are starting with an out of time engine is an entirely different topic about which I have no opinion.

$350 labor seems too good to be true. I just did the job myself and it took me quite a while to do the job. It took about 40 minutes just to remove the 3 bolts on the curved assembly in back of the water pump.

Please find someone who has the Miller tools and has done the job and is willing to help or do it for a similar fee. Our engines are $$$ and I'd hate for you to lose all of your rockers because the cam sprockets moved or timing was off a tooth or two. There are too many mechanic horror stories about timing belt jobs for the CRD and VW TDIs on the internet not to trust yourself to do it yourself or with the help of a local CRD GURU.

The more I read all the threads about TB and WP replacement the more I think I'll be doing the job myself, too much stuff to have in consideration and to be very careful about. I do not trust anybody, much less a not known mechanic (no offense to the mechanics out there, I just don't know you). The job does not seem too hard to do, it's just tedious work and a lot attention have to be paid to various things. I don't think this mechanic will have the proper tools nor he will be willing to buy them for this job.
In the meantime i still gathering all the parts.

If anybody is willing to come and help (with experience) I will be glad to compensate fairly.
