Post subject:  Contemplating buying first CRD.
After adding 50k to a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8 its starting to make me want to push it off a cliff. So, my GF has been begging for me to agree to a Jeep Liberty but I don't want to worry about the gas mileage.... Til I found the CRD! I found a 2005 CRD with 92k miles on it, and they are asking $12,995. Is that a little to high for the mileage or is that a decent price? We will be trading the Jetta in as well so the price should drop under $10k or stay around that.

My second question would be what are the horror stories that some of you have had? I have the worst luck imaginable with vehicles it seems so I kinda want to expect the worst.

I've had mine since 2008 and it had about 48,000 on it then. I now have 96,000 on it and have had only minor issues. It has been very reliable especially with all the understanding about its quirks found here on this forum. That price seems a little high for a 2005 but mileage isn't too high. Something to consider in this price would be if timing belt has been changed because if not, it will need to be done soon. I'm guessing you found this at a dealer so see what kind of warranty is being offered and what maintanence has been done. You din't mention if this was a Sport or Limited. I am considering getting rid of mine and getting a Wrangler. I found a decent deal on one at a dealer but they only wanted to give me about $8,800 on trade so needles to say, it was "no deal". I think last I looked on Edmunds or Kelley, I should be able to get at least $11000 on trade but would settle for $10000 and mine is in great shape except for the CEL.

I bought my 05 last year with 43K for $13,600 from a Jeep dealer. At the time I would see a 05 for sale every once in a while near 100k for 9-10k (private party). If you could get it for 11-12 with the timming belt it would be a great deal. It seems used car prices have gone up since than. I get about 25-26 mpg in winter and 27-29 in the summer.

Sorry, it's a Sport, I will look into the warranty because I noticed it would be due for a timing belt change as well. Hopefully I can get this Jetta fixed so I can trade it in.

You've got to "own" these CRD's--don't buy it and have your GF drive it around like it's a Civic, i.e., little things like warming up and cooling down the engine (turbo) are a slightly annoying but necessary for the long term part of ownership. A rewarding vehicle if you put the effort into it.

Take care of your equipment and it'll take care of you, like Grandpa used to say.

Pay dealer price only if they do the timing belt and water pump change--otherwise, if you really want one of these, be patient and wait for a forum-member to post his/her well taken care of vehicle.

I beg your pardon.....I warm my CRD up & cool it down each time I drive it. Also have regular maintenance done. I read a lot here also. :BANANA:

I think that price it a little high.
Pull the service record.
Check the tired.
Check break pad wear. F&R

Read noob guide. I would pay that if they included the 100K service.

I bought my 05 sport with 91xxx miles for 9500. I'm pretty sure I got a steal lol. Its clean in and out and he paid for the timing belt and water pump job :).

I must have robbed the dealership blind because I got my 05 sport in July last year with 63,000 on it for $10000 out the door. It was a true old lady's truck. She did all the maintenance at the dealership every 3000 miles. So it was truly well taken care of.

What is this "warm up" and "cool down" thing that you people are speaking of? Sounds like a bunch of technical-mechanical jibber jabber. :-)r

Warm up = many of the oil passages in the engine are tiny hence it's important to us proper weight diesel rated synthetic oil to ensure lubrication at all times. As part of that it's a good idea not to subject the engine to highway speeds until there is a bit of "life" from the coolant temp gauge as warm oil circulates better than cold. In my area that typically means about 0.5-1 mile of driving but in colder areas (even here if temp goes below 25F) it's a good idea to help warmup along by using the engine plug in heater element.

Cool down = as far as I know all manufactures of turbo charged engines (gas or diesel) recommend a period of lower speed driving or a period of idle, after time on the highway or any driving in extremely hot weather, to allow the turbo time to cool down. I know my 1993 Dodge Cummins did. The owner's manual specifies how much but generally speaking 2-3 miles at 35mph or so is ample. Just don't pull directly off the interstate into the Minute Mart after a couple of hundred miles at 75mph and immediately shut the engine off - very hard on turbos and oil in general.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of warming and cooling. I can always use more specific CRD knowledge.

Of course, I was joking about not knowing what warm up and cool down were. :)
