Had a trip to Gatlinburg Friday and we were delayed heading home that night until 2am, so it would be about 4am before I got back into Johnson City. Well I managed to miss my exit and right before I hit the next exit on I-40 which it 22 miles down the road I hit something big int he road. Never saw it no idea what it was it was just solid and scared the hell out of us. Well I had another hour ont he road and noticed I seemes to be using more fuel than normal, but I had the full time 4wd on and was poking slowly down the highway because of the rainstorm so I figured the 4wd was just killing my mileage. Got back into JC with 1/4 of a tank and went to bed. Woke up four hours later to head to the race track to support my shop and I noticed it looked wet under the jeep which isnt unusual after a storm, until I smelled the diesel. Looks like I hit a big piece of tread and it punched a hole in the passengers side corner of my tank, leaked almost all the 1/4 tank onto my apartment complex's new asphalt driveway. Called chrysler to get a quote and yeah, new CRD fuel tank..... Ready for this? $967 before shipping for just the tank. |

Not going to risk it with my luck, I am going to call a few yards that have tanks listed on car-part and see if I cant get one that way. Guess it would be a good time for an in tank pump |

I saw the title of your thread and instantly thought... Just become an owner of one, it will happen eventually! If the boneyard method doesn't work (and I believe you can use the gasser tank too) for that kind of money you could also look at Summit Racing and get a metal fuel cell tank - It might change your capacity a little bit, but at the same time, metal tank. It would also be a LOT less money than that screwing from Mopar. |

That permatex stuff won't work on plastic but the online price for a new OEM plastic diesel tank looks to be ca. $300+shipping. |

There are two yards that say they have a tank for around $100 so I will probably go that route. My insurance deductible is $250 LoL I also have a garage with a lift. Now I just need to decide if I want to install the Kennedy fuel pump Ive had forever or get the airtex in tank setup |

mopar parts america has the tank alone listed.... MSRP $399 there online price $282.02 I also think it you want an in tank lift pump now is a great time since it all apart. you may also want to think about a fuel tank skid plate for some protection. http://www.moparpartsamerica.com/parts/ ... mCallOut=4 or plates here http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-skid- ... plates.htm |

I feel you pain when it comes to dealers ripping you off. I just asked about a new torque converter at my local parts counter. They wanted $700. I know there is a premium for being Canadian but come on. That's almost double the US list. |

Nah I just posted and odd looking new shiny aluminum diesel tank. Lol sorry had to do it. I have ran over a full size buck before felt him bounce all the way under the KJ before I slid to a stop. Not a bit or damage to anything just lots of fur. |

The gas tanks are the same? Never would have guessed.. If thats the case it wont be so bad but there really isnt much out there about replacing a tank |

I dropped the tank on ours when installing the lift pump from a Dodge pickup (w/Cummins)... Loosen the bolts holding the straps, down it comes. Don't forget the filler tube - I think it uses a wire type hose clamp. The fuel fittings are easy to pop off if you familiarize yourself with the fitting first... Good pics of the fittings (etc) can be found here: http://www.auerbach.ca/kj/lift_pump/ Disconnect the electrical connector (fuel gauge), and you're good to go. Should take you a half-hour to pull it - you may need good penetrating oil for the bolts on the tank straps. Naturally, you'll want the tank as low on fuel as you dare. In my case I used an old fuel pump and sucked it out at the fuel filter fitting in the engine compartment. If you're going through that much trouble, I'd order the in-tank pump and wiring harness from a gasser (check the lift-pump threads for details) and get the whole thing done in one swell foop. Here's a shot: Mark |

Dropping the tank is easy, just as what was described. Tell Mopar Parts America to buzz off on this one, their ability to change part prices on a whim is why I don't bother with them anymore. My local dealer now has me on a shop-rate cash account, so my prices with them are usually about $3 over MPA, BEFORE getting screwed on the shipping. I'll take that any day. Check out car-part.com for prices, just about any boneyard should be able to get you the tank, and for PENNIES. Its just a tank. |
