Have an 05 Liberty CRD with blown engine. Put 167,000 miles on it then a rod decided to exit block while rolling down the interstate. Don't want to give up on the vehicle. Tows my boat and whatever else I asked it too, until now.

Any ideas where to get a decent and affordable replacement?

Wow, what rotten luck  . What oil have you been using?
I don't think the word "affordable" applies to CRD engine replacement or major repair

Yeah my kind of luck. Using Shell rotella that my local shop put in. Was about a thousand miles into the most recent oil change when it popped. Dealer said it was probably a compression spike? Don't know.

I'm not sure I would trust a dealership to diagnose that tomorrow's name will end with a "Y" or that the sun will rise in the east.

Compression doesn't "spike" unless you are using something other than air to fill your cylinders. They all move in the same sequence: Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow. All the time, every time.

Now, if you told me that your turbo failed and you somehow didn't feel it, and then the cylinder decided it didn't like life anymore because of lack of oil to the rod bearings... That I could understand. It happened to my original engine, which is why I now have an oil pressure gauge on the main gallery that feeds everything.

Geordi, were you drag racing at the time? what caused your turbo to fail so bad that it caused all your oil to go into the intake? Which I suppose could have caused hydraulic shock destroying the rod(s). All these things going wrong with the CRD's out there is making me think I should get rid of mine before it grenades! Where on the motor did you plumb an oil pressure gauge into? I like this idea. I'm starting to miss my 4.0L Cherokee which I sold with 285K, ran like a top and never asked for anything except gas and oil.

I just got back from the hospital (work related, took a 20 foot aluminum beam to the head, 4 big staples) so this is gonna be a short reply.

No, I was not drag racing. I was driving normally, on a cold engine on a morning that had been in the low 20's overnight and was barely 32 when I started the engine. I was within 2 miles of leaving home, which unfortunately is my driveway dumps right onto a 55mph 2-lane road. The turbo did not get enough lubrication and the bearing seized, violently snapping the shaft at the exhaust side, and allowing the full oil flow directly into the exhaust line.

The gallery that feeds the oil to the turbo also feeds the oil to the rod bearings on the crankshaft and to the piston cooling jets. It is the main oil gallery on the block. When that gallery suddenly had a massive oil outlet for the pressure, the cylinders and rod bearings starved for oil pressure. The #1 rod bearing completely melted away, at the same time that the piston overheated in its bore and did damage to itself.

It is extremely likely that even though I did shut the engine down after coasting / idling to a stop for about 20 seconds or so, thinking I had popped a boost hose... In fact the catastrophic engine damage had already happened b/c of the lack of oil pressure to the pistons. After replacing the turbo and while on the test drive, the engine started making VERY bad sounds, and just as I grabbed the key to shut it off... BANG - The #1 rod had inverted and punched a hole in the oil pan, and there was nothing left of the #1 piston or sleeve except shrapnel.

The oil pressure sensor is installed into the same main gallery, replacing a threaded plug back in the #4 location against the transmission bellhousing.

What does the inside of the engine look like, have you looked in there yet, if so .... was there any noticeable gummy oil or hard carbon soot build up or noticeable varnish around piston rings and other engine parts?

Soot is bad, varnish and carbon build up around piston rings and other moving engine parts are just as bad. They will quickly bring a hard working diesel engine to a complete catastrophic stop.

Are you positive that the Lube Shop used the proper synthetic oil approved for diesel motors?

Here's an interesting write up regarding the prevention of soot build up.

Since geordi is apparently a bit laid up (get better soon - I did not know a hard hat was needed for sound work) I'll weigh in a bit. For some details of the events back in 2009 take a look at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=40362 .

Short version is loss of oil via turbo shaft killed oil feed in the upper gallery which starved #1 piston first causing abrupt exit of #1 rod thru oil pan. Not gummy oil or soot. As I recall my discussions with geordi regarding oil pressure; NO the idiot oil light did not come on which is why he is not happy with the oil light sender being right next to the oil filter. Given the CRD oil circulation pattern, is the last place to lose pressure in the event of a catastrophic oil leak.

See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66012&p=726274&hilit=failure+rod+turbo+installed#p726274 for an alternative installation location for an oil pressure sending unit in the upper oil gallery. Given the nature of the 2009 failure having a gauge in this location might not have helped BUT it would have given a few seconds warning that the upper gallery had lost oil pressure which might have been enough time to shift into neutral and shut the engine down before losing #1 piston/rod.

Where are you located?

I'm parting out my 05 Liberty with 84,000 Miles on it.

Engine is in perfect shape.
