| Post subject: | squeaking from drivers side at cold start |
In the mornings, before the Jeep is warm, I hear squeaking from the driver's side of the engine bay. I tend to think that this is the belt tensioner. How can I go about confirming/denying this? If it is the tensioner, where do I get a new one (and a belt). If its not, what else should I look for? Thanks! |

IMHO serp belts should be changed no later than every 50K miles so how long has it been for yours? A worn serp belt can chirp and an old timers trick to check for belt chirp is to pour a small amount of water on the belt while it's doing the chirp - if chirp goes away replace belt. Absent that a known point of noise is a failed or failing alternator pulley/clutch. Diagnosis - open hood and remove plastic engine cover; crank up engine leaving it in Park; from the driver's side look past the alternator pulley down the belt to the serp belt tensioner (extra light may help); if the tensioner is bouncing around it's almost certain that the alternator pulley is shot (FYI my pulley is fine and the tensioner barely moves). If so good OEM or same grade pulley replacement part run ca. $70 but removal of the old pulley can be an issue (installation is just spin on as it's reverse thread so the pulley tightens by use). A bad alternator pulley can damage the serp belt tensioner and typically a bad tensioner will "lean" into the power steering pulley. |

The Jeep is at 77,000 and this belt has never been replaced afaik. I'll take a look at the tensioner and pulley, but will definitely replace the belt this weekend. Thanks! |

I honestly do not know if the serp belt can be changed with the fan shroud and fan in place. If so it's going to be a really tight fit getting to the serp belt tensioner and if the tensioner is bad (I hope not as it's pricey) I'm sure you will need to remove the fan and fan shroud. In the event fan and fan shroud removal are necessary you might check out my comments at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66086 . The fan nut is 36mm and you can see what I mean about the allen wrench at http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html just scroll down a couple of images past the picture of using a palm nailer to jar the nut loose. Bottom line is I'd strongly recommend one of the various fan shroud mods for future working ease, you will know what I mean after you pull the stupid thing, if you need to pull the shroud and fan. |

Re: when to change the timing belt - Ideally on or slightly before 100k miles. While you're going through the effort of reaching it, typically it's wise to also replace the idlers, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and any hoses that are a) hard to reach and b) showing any sign of degradation (swelling, cracking, etc). Not doing a timing belt job just doing the serp belt the one that controls alternator power steering so on. |
