I don't think the motor could just seize that quickly...
did you hear any noises coming from the engine before it stopped?
My guess is that some sensor just quit or a fuse blew out.
Loose or dirty battery terminal.......

Not sure but here is what happened. I drove from San Antonio to Austin this morning to visit my mom for Easter. I got in town and had to stop at a light. When I touched the go-pedal to move forward, I went about 10 feet maybe and then nothing. Tried to restart but nothing. The battery is good and all the dash lights worked but the starter does not engage/turn/click/nada. There is nothing...I had it scheduled to go into the garage this Monday after Easter!!! What timing (pun intended). Since this thing just went dead at barely any rpm...I am hoping (if it is the timing belt) that no additional damage is done. Maybe??? it is something else. Well, I will find out Monday or Tuesday most likely. On another note...AAA Plan paid for itself with a free two from SA to Austin. Happy Easter |

Yep...I didn't think it would seize like that. No other noises...just silence. battery terminal are clean and tight. I discoed them and reinstalled...still nothing. It is almost like the starter somehow engaged and locked in. I will just have to wait for Monday and get the diagnosis. I can only hope it is just a fuse or sensor

Interesting. Makes me wonder if the "rod" connecting the key to the starter switch broke and the starter switch defaulted to off or if the starter switch died and cut power to the ECU? |

We have an "Automatic Shut Down" (ASD) relay in the engine bay, and I believe there might be a fuse on that too. Check on that, b/c if that relay isn't on, you won't get anything. I believe it activates the instant you put the key in the ON position, and must be working to start as well. You can try swapping a relay in from one of the two radiator fan relays, they are both the same and the fan will default to an ON status (not hurting anything) if one of those two is removed. Replacement relay is like $12. |

Thanx for the responses. I will definitely try the fuse swap. The way it is acting...a fuse or sensor burnt/malfunctioning might be a great start. |

FWIW nothing about what you have described sounds like a Tbelt. Sounds like some random electrical problem. |

It was the fuse on the drivers side fuse box...very bottom row toward the front of the JEEP. |

Which fuse specifically? The lid has a chart with the names / circuits that are powered. Fuses do sometimes go just b/c of age / corrosion in the terminals that can increase the amperage enough. at a 12v system, it doesn't take much to up the amperage a fair amount. |

Well the timing belt and water pump have been replaced and the CRD starts...BUT...the thing is at half power and smokes terribly under power. Mechanic is going to be looking thru it again. Any ideas??? |

He did the timing wrong. Go back in and completely re-verify the timing and the belt tension, the pins MUST LINE UP and you can't be accurate on the camshafts with allen keys. Those would allow too much wobble, which would lead to being a tooth off, which is what it sounds like you are. |

Well I went over and looked the CRD over...test drove...and it acted the same as when the intercooler hose had a huge tear in it... Well guess what, The mechanic didn't attach/tighten the hose and it was off...lol. Works great now

For some reason I read your previous posting that it was making noises, which is why I thought it was out of time. Obviously I need to get my eyes checked or quit doing 3 things at once.  I'm glad you have it back and working. |

Oh Yeah...and the fuse that blew out that started this thread was the #14 in the inside drivers side fuse box PDC Fuel Pump/AC Clutch, Starter Relay/Engine Controller/Transmission Controller (Diesel Only) (I am now definitely carrying a couple spares 10 Amp Red) |

For what it's worth if the blown fuse was a 10amp one front bottom with an empty slot below it then it was #14 (PDC Fuel Pump/AC Clutch, Starter Relay/Engine Controller/Transmission Controller (Diesel Only)) which would certainly stop a vehicle. Why it blew would be a different issue. |
