Well – a couple of months ago – I was accelerating up an overpass – and Jeep did a cough sputter limp mode. It’s done that before – when the Fuel filter was old and it’d been about 10 months ~15K miles so it was time. Changed Filter added Diesel 911…….but it kept having problems...

not all the time – but after sitting overnight – or all day at work it would drive about a mile cough sputter – throw a code either P0192 or P0193 and then clear up and drive the rest of the way without a problem. Occasionally it got a little worse, occasionally better – but normally cough, sputter, code, clear up, drives fine.

I have an intank lift pump and a new style fuel head – pump is always solid – even after sitting overnight – I tried bleeding the fuel head and got pure fuel, no bubbles ……

Drained the filter contents into a glass jar and let it sit….. no separation, no drops, no discoloration, no coffee grounds.

Changed fuel stations 4 times, filters twice, added lots of Diesel 911, Powerservice Grey…… but cough, sputter, code, clears up drives fine.

So it starts fine – drives about a mile (slowly – housing area) then coughs, sputters – but almost always its clear by the end of 5 miles.

So either – I have a fuel problem – it settles out overnight and then the chemicals hide it…..

Or I have a fuel head problem and – it leaksdown overnight and then the pump hides it….

– I decided it had to be between the fuel head to injector somewhere.

So – I ordered a Racor…….

Last Monday was the worst – stalled 3 times on the way to work – threw a lots of codes – but it’d restart so I finally made it to work. On the way home I was ready to
take it to a shop…. Except….. it ran fine…… no problems…..no sputter…….no codes…….WTF ????????????

When I got home the Racor had arrived…..

It ran okay the rest of the week but I changed the fuel head anyway.

Can’t believe how much smoother it is with the Racor, it’s different enough that I must have had some small issues all along….. and FYI this is now my 4th Fuel head – 2 originals, 1 new style Mopar and now the Racor.

If anyone else has to change I recommend skipping the intermediate steps and going straight to Racor, and I also added Stan’s pressure gauge – so the Cummins intank pump – at idle pushes 9psi across a clean 2 micron Racor filter – I’m hoping I can monitor that and decide to change the filter before I get the cough, sputter limp mode….

(It's only been about 70 miles - so I won't be sure for a few weeks - but right now it's working great - will update if there's any new information)

Awesome news! And... love the comparison of old/new/racor. Be nice to quantify the contribution of the filter heads themselves to this air problem... to any significant degree.

What's the part number for the Racor filter and head and does it have the plug on the bottom for the water in fuel sensor? What about the fuel heater plug? I have an 05 as well, and the finer Racor filter is of interest to me, but I don't want to disable the Jeep plugs, or have to do any major rewiring!

that's with the heater - WIF is ~$25 extra
TC from Omega is $61 + $10 shipping

misc connectors from NAPA ~ $30

one caveat - one of the comments was that Racor doesn't recommend Teflon tape - because of the possibility of it getting into the pump - but both Bio and Stan used it and I tried without it and I've got a really slow drip - so I'm going to rebuild with Teflon

Use a quality teflon tape.....the cheap stuff is the stuff that tears apart and gets into stuff.

only mod to the system is soldering wires - so you could trim and resolder - but I don't see any time I'd want to do that.

or just ignore the heater..depending on where you live. My wife's has been non functioning since I put in the Racor.
so has the WIF sensor..I still want to put this back. there is a post on the how to make an adapter to screw in the factory WIF into the Racor housing.

if you can use the vacuum/boost gauge for monitoring the fuel pressure you be fine until the pressure goes below 0..the gear pump on the back of the CP3 will draw a strong vacuum. something on the order of 20 inches and stay running.

I purchased mid-grade hydralic thread sealant for the hydro-hose store for $20. I got a 1.5 ounce bottle but man does that stuff work. I used it on greae projects for years. This is much better then teflon tape

Bob - there's not a hydro-hose store around here - so I searched for hydraulic sealant and found this

one of the claims is seals without particles that could contaminate systems.

shops around here didn't stock it and wanted $40 to order it - but Amazon had it for $20 free shipping

I think I used about 6-8 drops......
