The jeep quit on me a couple days ago, just like I shut off the key, no noise no nothing. I hauled it to the local dealership and they charged me $102.64 to tell me that they didn't know what was wrong, they couldn't fix it and that I would need a new motor. I took it to a reputable diesel shop here in town (Rapid City SD) and ask if they had any experience with this type of diesel. They assured me that they could fix it. They found that the timing belt had broke (71K miles???) I'm waiting on the machine shop now to see if the head and valves are OK. The estimate now stands at around $3500. The dealership had told me that the timing belt was intact, so much for their expertise. Just waiting now for word on it. Sure love that outfit but it is getting costly fast. :furious:

They're probably assuming all 16 rockers/lifters need replacement at dealer prices; around $1,200 right there. You might call them and see if you could provide the rockers/lifters, and then order a set from wobbly for less than half that price.

As for the shop you found, I'm sure they'll do a decent job - sorry you weren't able to take care of it at home.

At 71k, it's premature - but - there may be a time factor involved as well. Six years is enough time for oxidation and hardening to be a factor... w.r.t. belt life.

Thats too bad.

Its very likely that all 16 rockers went, and at $47 each they add up. Plus labor and the regular timing belt job parts and labor.

All in all they are probably doing about $1500 in parts and $1500 in labor. Not way outta whack, but a little high.

If you were closer I would offer to do the job for half that in labor, done it before and all.

good luck.

If you want to see pictures starting on this page you can see some pictures of what happens to the rockers in a mild case of a slipped belt:

Sir Sam,
I've been watching this site for many months and have learned a lot from guys like you. I too wish I was closer to you, I would much rather pay a knowledgable CRDer like yourself than any shop. Thanks for all you contribute to Lost.

You should be able to "PM" him - wobbly is his handle on this forum.
