Hi Folks I noticed that the power steering fluid had dropped substantially for the first time and had to top it up but I also noticed that there could be a leak, where do I start looking in case it is a self fix problem.

When I first bought the CRD mine ran low and there it was leaking from somewhere but I was not able to pinpoint the leak. I refilled it and avoided hitting full right or left. I have not had to fill it since (10K). Not sure if that is helpful at all. I would like to hear if anyone else has had the same issue. |

Go to Sir Sam's NOOB guide and get copies of the FSMs and parts manuals if you don't have them already. On the FSM get both 05 and 06 (05 lacks diesel cooling system data and general diagnostics but has illustration keys while 06 is the reverse). I'm not familiar with the guts of the CRD power steering system although I am familiar with much older systems. Essentially what you have is very similar to power brakes; a boost sysem (e.g. power steering pump) that provides fluid pressure to hoses that then run a hydraulic assist to whichever way you are steering. Loss of fluid is via pump seals; seals on any external "ram" connected to the steering; or loose hose fittings/bad hoses. I'd check hoses and hose fittings first and yes avoiding full lock turns can help. |
