Hi Folks I have jacked the rear and want to adjust the handbrake which is now almost useless, I have adjusted the cable from the front on a few occasions to tension the hand brake but I think its time to do it on the drum itself. Which direction do i turn the adjuster to tighten if i'm underneath and looking at the slot. |

The handbrake is supposed to be self-adjusting from within the handle mechanism itself. There have been some tips on how to fix the problems with the brake...you may find some onfo if you search it. I saw on another Jeep forum that some owner sprayed some Q20 on the levere mechanism and that fixed his problem...I do not know how true that is. |

That's what the manual says but at some stage you need to check the brake linings and adjust on the drum, there's a littele grommet that you remove and a wheel that you either adjust left or right to tension the hand brake with the wheels both off the ground so you can adjust without too much resistance. |

You may want to pull the rear wheel off and rotor to check the parking brake shoes. Mine were crumbling at 60k miles. |

I would pull the rotor's and check the shoes, mine was broken, lining off the shoe around 55,000 miles. Also the adjusters are self adjusting, well that is what they say. I have seen the adjusters get stuck, frozen as well. Also if memory is correct there is adjustment on both cables I think. When I replaced the parking brake shoes I replaced all the hardware as well. Adjusters too. |
