I have an upgrade TC on the way. I need to know if this is a DIY job or do I need to use professionals? I'm pretty good with working on the KJ and have the tools (well no vehicle lift, I'd use stands). What do you think? Anyone tried this?

Also what else do I need, like new bolt sets, etc? I have a new RMS ready to go in at the same time.

If you have to ask, get the pros.

Glend, there is a write up by a member replacing his TC himself while the vehicle was on blocks, I just can't find it.

It wasn’t easy but it can be done, he rigged up a hydraulic jack with a platform attached to it too lift and hold tranny while he worked on it. Good luck finding the posting using the cryptic forum search feature.

Glend,

I did just that, with the Jeep standing high on ramps & blocks. I used an hydraulic bike lift, added a plate to seat and move the transmission. The trick is to be high enough so you can easily move the lift under the truck, even better if you can actually roll it out from under and work on it. That would be required to properly service the pump, if needed (replacement or adding the Transgo fix). It looked like a daunting job at first, but was not half-bad as what I thought it to be...

I did mine including the Transgo kit.
If you are patient, have enough strength, and mechanical, you should be able to do it.
if you never played in the sand box when you were a young kid, you better hire it done.
BTW: The KJ manual is not the greatest technical write up. Best to check out some of the posts in the CRD Tech section with pics.

I am JUST finishing mine, 1-2 hours a night for a few nights (maybe ten hours total?) A few snags but I will wrap it up tomorrow (transmission is bolted back up now)

It wasn't impossible, for sure worth saving the price of labor... BUT make sure you have enough time in case problems arise :)

Good luck, let me know if you want hints while they are fresh in my mind (BTW I used GDE notes and they were perfect)
