Post subject:  Glow plug indicator ?
Hi guy's, I've noticed that the orange symbol on the dash that looks like a spring, and needs to go out before cranking a diesel, comes on when I turn on the ignition ok, but go's out almost straight away !! :? ... like 1 second and thats it !!

Other diesels I've driven, it stay's on for at least 5-6 seconds at least from cold ..

It starts from cold after turning over a few time's, but its not all that cold at the mo here, so not too much of a problem, but it just dosent seem to stay on long enough to heat the glow plugs sufficiantly to me ???

Any idea's :?

That's exactly what ours does. I agree it seems odd but that seems to be the norm for these rigs.

That's the way it's supposed to be for fast heat glow plugs.

As others have pointed out this behaviour is correct though they also stay on after the indicator has extinguished for a period of time that depends on temperature.

I took a ~10 year break from driving diesels when I left the UK and was also surprised at the difference when I bought the Jeep in 2006. A world of difference from the VW/Renault/Citroen engines that I'd driven in the late '80s and early '90s.

At -20F it hangs on for about 4 seconds.
Guess you will never see that in the UK.

I have seen the same thing with my 2006 CRD. The temps here have not been below 40 degrees yet, and only twice in the morning, have I seen the glowplug light come on. Otherwise, when it is warm out, I don't even see it cycle on the dash.

I have never seen an orange spring glow plug indicator. All we have here is a red dot. Goes off in about 2-5 seconds but the book says the cycle continues to heat based on temperature.

That red dot is the sentry light. Take a look at your owner's manual. When I bought the liberty, mine goes on so quick, it took a few times to figure out where it was.

:o .... no not quite that cold mate :shock:

It got down to -14c at one point, the winter before last!

The motor mounts were advertised as " advanced" in the original literature. So yes, some people on the forum have not had good luck. Here is an example of what was commonplace when the rig was new.
"This represents solid advancement on the diesel front, with Jeep going to great lengths to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness levels. This is partially due to engine balance shafts, fluid-filled hydro engine mounts, and generous amounts of sheetmetal dampening, among other notable measures.". http://www.greencar.com/articles/jeep-l ... nt-suv.php

My glow plug indicator has never lit as far as I can tell. Had the CRD since last August. Not a problem though as no codes show and I know how long to wait based on previous diesel experience. Just need to know if CEL will go on if whole glow plug system is not working.

VW at least in the US used them in the front motor mounts from around 1985 and on wards on the Jetta diesel so they're nothing new :juggle:
