I just bought a 2005 CRD, the CEL was on throwing an overboost code, I removed the turbo and freed up the sticking turbo vane actuator arm. The CRD runs good now with no codes or limp mode, but it does blow a little more smoke than it should on acceleration and its only getting 21-22 mpg highway. It doesn't seem to be building boost like it should. The actuator moves to the top with vacum and drops off with out vacum. What controls the vacum on the actuator? Any idea what to check? |

Be sure the little paper solenoid air filter (hangs down off the passenger side of the vertical black vacuum canister behind the air filter box) is not clogged if so replace. Bypass the boost pressure solenoid (if you need pictures email me) if problem goes away replace solenoid. If your turbo>intercooler>engine hoses have woven mesh covers and are soggy with oil pull them off the engine (while off check air box to turbo hose from tear on bottom just in front of turbo), remove mesh, carefully check bottom for tears, holes, soft spots and if any are found replace hose(s) ideally with Samcos. Clean MAP sensor see Sir Sam's NOOB guide for how to and other good stuff. |

thanks papaindigo i checked most of the stuff you mentioned, the map was dirty so I cleaned it and it helped, i also unplugged the maf and that also made a differance. hopefuuly that will get in the 25+mpg range |

Assuming all things working properly (particularly that the termostat is working right so operating temp reading on the temp gauge is vertical or just a tiny bit left of there); that fluids are correct (ATF+4 tranny, proper weight synthetic diesel rated oil, and HOAT antifreeze); that you are not running winter blend diesel (cuts into mpg a bit); and that you do not have a tune. Under those stock circumstances I'd expect (hand calculated GPS corrected) city mpg ca. 18-19 mpg (10 mile one way commute average speed ca. 20 max speed 45) and hwy 27-28 (generally flat terrain no towing or headwind - locked up in 5th gear running 62mph/1,800rpm, with or without AC). That's what I got on both my 2005 CRDs (dump truck took care of #1). GDE EcoTune bumped those figures up 10-20% to low 20s in town and low 30s on hwy. Aggressive driving will reduce those figures and conservative driving may increase them a bit. |
