Doing some car ramp shopping today


I will use might vac to pull as much fluid through dip stick tube and go from there. May dump some new Supertech atf+4 in and drive around to mixed it up. Then do it over again pumping out fluid. Going to need car ramps to get her up. Autozone has 2 filters and grey rtv $26 which I purchased and even picked up Mopar filters from dealership $67 with there rtv. No mopar kit was available like suggested in old post. Is autozone part going to work just fine and save some money. Any suggestions would be appreciated never done auto tranny before. Also from my reading Supertech should be full synthetic and be same fluid as Mopar correct me if there is problem using this stuff. How many quarts will I need. Dealership will do this service for $200 which seems a bargain but I also like learning and doing projects.

I do not know about the fluid, or the filters from auto zone. You will need 8-9 qts when dropping the pan and replacing the filters. But do not over fill. Not hard to do, but make sure the o ring is installed properly for the flat filter, and the old gasket comes off on the spin on filter.

How do you get old flat filters round oring out? I am at that stage right now. Should I just leave it alone

I would not reuse the old one, should come off with the old filter, if not find something to pull the old one out. When reinstalling install it in the hole and make sure it is seated all the way flat. Do not put it on the filter then install, you will damage the trans,

Use only the dealership filters,they are the updated filters(spin on one) that will not stop flow to the trans cooler.

You sure about 8 or 9 quarts? Or are you talking pints I thought 4 quarts would get it close than add little until fluid is on low side dip with motor off. I know you check fluids warmed up running but my past experience was less than good on toyota vehicles getting right amount. I compared all 3 filters original had larger holes and 2 new ones looked pretty much same. I did install factory but not really sure that was required.

I am glad I bought a case when I did mine and transfer case. I got a quart left. I left the tranny dripping for about an hour while I was cleaning the pan. Took 9 quarts to top off.

Don't forget to replace the anti-drainback valve - which should be a part of a standard transmission service. The anti-drainback valve holds fluid in the system to ensure that it is charged on startup, faulty anti-drainback valves allow fluid to drain out into the pan and requires a delay in driving on first start in the morning due to fluid starvation (has to wait for the pump to recharge the system).

I put pick on anti drain back sump oring but is in there really good. Went ahead and left it there. Topped up with 5 quarts started the motor shifted little bit. The level looks really close with motor off cold side is correct. 8 or 9 quarts looks like over fill to me. You are right about not putting sump ring on filter then installing. Some videos online show this in fact. Oring is flush against alum and would require same size socket to install then filter.

The amount you refill is all going to depend on how long you let it drain when you had the pan off. It could between anywhere between 4-9 quarts.
