I just called the dealership that I purchased my CRD from and requested a firm quote on replacing my water pump & timing belt.

My cost $1,264.93 + 7 % NC tax. He asked if I was sitting down. I told him I was @ 89,000 miles so lay it on me. I asked if their tech had performed this procedure? His reply was "sure, plenty of them". They would need the car over night.

I have been away from this forum for a long while. I need to start building a tool kit to switch my belt myself. The last number I read on this forum was around $600.00ish.

Thanks,

Tom

I would make sure that the price was for a CRD and not a gasser Liberty. If correct, that is a great price from a dealer. Mine said it would be 2K.

It is definitely for the CRD. I asked about their diesel guy and he used to work for Chrysler/Jeep dealer in Boone.

Honestly, I agree that's not too bad either.

Thanks,

Tom

That seems rather low for a dealer and I'd wonder what's included. Dealer price alone on the parts (leaving out serpentine belt and its idlers which should be done while in there if they have not been serviced in the last 50K miles) likely runs ca. $700. Labor is likely on the order of 5-8 hrs but I don't know the "book" rate on hours.

See http://colorado4wheel.com/content/KJ_TB.html for an idea of what's involved although removal of that front end stuff is not critical (makes access easier and allows inspection of intercooler for leaks).

If they really have done some, I wonder about the implied lots, and it covers what Sam lists in the way of parts that's a good price.

The local dealer in Cary, NC quoted me $1600 for the complete job inclucing the water pump and the little hoses attached to it. I believe their rate for labor is somewhere about $130/hr.

I had mine replaced at the local jeep garage with water pump, belt, tensioner and idlers back in 2009 for $1232.00. Parts then were $681.25, labor $500.00. 3 years later that doesn't sound like a bad deal.. :JEEPIN:

I just had to get mine done at the dealer. I was planing on doing it myself but the water pump went at 97000 miles when I had no time to do it. Took it to Palmer Dodge Jeep in Alpharetta, the total cost of the job for TB and WP was $1053.00 and I they let me supply the water pump and tensioner which I already had. I dropped the car off one day and brought them the parts the next day at around 10am, by 2pm they called me to tell me it was ready. It appears everything went well. It's been over a week and over 800 miles. I was worried sick thinking they were going to screw something up. Read tons of horror stories here.
I can say I was pleased with the service and the job done.

Sir Sam, I wish you were closer.....

Sam,

That is the best price I have heard about for this maintenance. You must be able to fly through these!! $50 extra for the water pump is phenomenal, that adds a solid 1-2 hours to the job. Anyone within a reasonable drive ought to look into this!

Keith, when I do the water pump it adds about 45 minutes to an hour to the job. When I do it I will only do it with an OEM pump, I pull the cams/rear cover, and then leave the rear section of the pump in place and replace the front half only, saves the trouble of getting at all those hard to reach bolts.

It may be a good price, but I don't exactly have people breaking down my door to pay me to do it.

You may get people breaking down your door now that you posted the fee.

Even paying for your airfare is worth it.

And if you ever have a TB job to do in the New England area, leave your dedicated CRD Miller tools at home because I will make my tools available.

If one other person in NE wants to do it, I will split the airfare and loan you a vehicle to use for the other job. I have all the Miller tools, regular stuff and all the parts.

I did post my offer before for timing belt service......even cheaper than I offer it now...the problem is I am geographically limited, the east coast and midwest are all within driving distance of each other, it only takes a few hours to drive from ohio to DC for example.

I'm actually open to this, find a group of people wanting to have it done and we can all do it together in one weekend.

Bub (KJ119) in louisiana has an issue with his KJ and could use the help.

I'd be willing to donate to the cause.
