I was trying to find a way to run wire for a brake controller today. I thought greasing up the wire and running it through the factory grommet would work. Well, I pushed out the grommet. I attempted for a few hours to try and get it back seated correctly in the plastic piece. No luck. Is there any known tricks to do this? I am about to seal it up using an alternative product...great stuff!

Forget "Great Stuff" if you mean the foam insulation in a can. It gets hard and fractures easily. The non-expanding latex foam might work although IMHO just use silicone caulk.

For those that want to run wires from the cab thru the firewall in a left hand drive KJ with an automatic tranny. Pull the fuel filter assembly and the bracket it mounts on, including the stupid lower bolt, and you will find a rubber grommet in the firewall behind and slightly toward the passenger side. With a razor knife cut an "X" in that grommet (do not try to remove and reinsert, been there done that). Run the wires thru there; on the cab side that's the grommet for the gasser throttle cable that's high above the go pedal. Works great.

you could try an old trick of mine...
loop a piece of twine around the grommet and in the groove that uses to locate in the firewall. you should be able to then carefully pull and work the grommet back into place as you pull the twine out. expect to need to do this a couple times to get it right, possibly with more than 1 layer of twine. you'll figure it out if you're clever. :)

as for getting through the firewall... pull back the carpet and look along the seam sealer. you'll see a small plastic plug partially buried by the sealer. remove the plug, trim it to be tight around your wire of choice, then feed the wire through and reinstall the plug. seal with your choice of sealant.

I am not sure on the twine thing. It appears that you need to fit the plastic piece inside the rubber then snap it in place. With the master cylinder and brake booster in the way, it seems nearly impossible.
