Well I don't condone (sp?) drag racing by any means. But in one of my rare moments of stupidity this morning on the way in to work a lady in one of those new Ford Explorers with the 4.6L V8 started messing with me. So I flipped the OD gears off and we ran 'em from a green light. Neither of us really shot off like a cannon from a dead stop. I think we were both trying to figure out if the other person was serious. 8) But then at about 35 mph it was obvious and we both hit the throttle. We ran side by side up to about 75 mph. Boy those V8s can run.

From 10mph you would have instantly put a car length, I would guess.

With the OD (overdrive) gears turned on, the computer tries to get the Jeep into 5th gear as soon as possible. And the Jeep has no power in 5th gear (more than gas engines for sure but still weak). So I flip off the OD so that 3rd gear is as high as the transmission will get, and that in turn gives more acceleration and power.

So what do you d if you're in 3rd gear and have 3000 rpms and the CRD is not pulling anymore, do you turn O/D back on or do you let your opponent pass you at that point?

PS: I smoked some kids in a gasser libby today, the look on there face was funny "What the &^@#! was that? Wasnt that the same Vehicle I have?"

Those little inline 4-bangers aren't too bad, either.

I beat a V8 1/2 ton ram driven by some cocky 20something, and a new Xterra, couldn't tell if it was the supercharged version of it, as he was the one looking at my tailgate!
Those were the only 2 encounters where I was sure the other vehicle was giving it 100%.

Yeaterday I smoked a Chevy Silverado, 5.3 V8, A Nissan Exterra, Turbo, and a 3.7 Liberty, of course we had 6" of snow and none of them apparently had their rigs in 4WD. Can't beat Selec Trac.

What I'm saying is that above 45 mph the CRD pulls a LOT harder with OD turned off than it does with it turned on. Even up to the speed limit on the Interstate it'll pull hard with OD off. Turn it on and it becomes a dog.

I've even had a guy in a Chevy Durajunk diesel pickup try to run me when he saw my "Diesel Power" decal in the back window. He never passed me either.

Most be something wrong with my CRD, when I have my foot firmly planted on the floorboard it ramps up to 3000 to 3200 rpm between shifts.
Top gear doesn't come in till I'm really hooking like 75 - 85 mph, it sure tells you when it shifts however.
I have one of the zero problem, no shudder, pulls a load like a log truck, smooth as silk, unless I'm doing this, trannies.

Mine seems to accelerate better if I don't hold my foot all the way to the floor. If I floor it it accelerates to 4000 rpm in each gear, then shifts. If I hold the throttle so it shifts in the 3000 rpm range it accelerates better.

Ours has been the same, and I had the TSB done this morning and can't really tell much difference other then it does seem to shift a little smoother then before. I haven't really driven it as yet, but I will put a couple hours in it sometime this weekend and post back about any thing I notice.

You're saying your CRD won't run 4000 rpm? If i come anywhere close to flooring it mine will run up to 4000 in each gear.

odd

Ooop's!!! I forgot about that part, it does pull the redline when asked to do so. It just has never given us any problems other then a MAF failure in the first 1000 miles. No tranny problems at all, although I always thought it shifted clunky, not smooth like my Magnum. My Magnum is the first auto trans vehicle I have driven on a daily basis in 30 years so I might not be the best judge on how a tranny shifts.

Edit: Well there was the MB 240D automatic slush box, but that really doesn't count as it wasn't a daily driver.

I've left so many different vehicles watching my rear bumper pull away off lights I've forgotten more than I remember. This thing's a blast off the light! Xterras, 1/2 ton P/Us, countless passenger cars, other Jeeps (no Liberty's, but JEEZ I've seen a lot of CJ and Wrangler owners that think they're the fastest thing on the road). I'm not saying that I'm going to pick on a Porsche, or a WRX STi or anything (dang those things LAUCH), but this thing really does kick ya in the pants for a such a heavy rig. If nothing else, it leaves people scratching their heads, that's for sure.

And I am a HUGE proponent of drag-racing away from traffic lights...until you get to the speed limit. If more people would get up to speed in a launch-type fashion, we'd have a lot less traffic jams. I can't stand seeing people lolly-gagging their jolly old way through an intersection during rush hour. Yea, it saves gas to idle up to the speed limit, but it makes the population as a whole waste more fuel because we're all still sitting at the light because it turned red before the first car got through the intersection.

Oops, apparently there's no soap box needed....it appears I brought my own. I'll try to not break my ankle getting down.

On the other hand, I laugh at people who launch off the go just to get to the next red light and then have to slam on their brakes, a happy medium is needed in my opinion.
