| Post subject: | Gas station cutting off the pump!!! |
Ok this is getting to be a real problems (joking) I have had the Mobil station cut off the diesel pump twice while I was fuelng thinking I was filling a gas Jeep with diesel. Also happened at the Hess station two weeks ago. Then a clerk, at the Circle K, cut the pump off when my wife was fueling the Jeep and wouldn't turn it back on!!! Anyone else having these problems. I'm considering get a large sticker to put on the back that says "yes....it's a Diesel!" Gotta love the looks you get when your filling it up..........specially at the big truck stops. |

In Oregon, it is against the law to pump your own gas. And since I use BioDiesel I use a card-lock where I pump my own, and it is not attended. However, the one time that I did need to get a couple gallons to get me home I pulled into a Shell station, and the guy didn't believe me when I said diesel. He kept pushing the "Regular" button. I said, "No, Diesel!" and he was like "Regular?" Once, when pulling into a station with our boat in tow, to fill the boat - they were very amazed that the Jeep was a diesel.... When I pulled into a rock yard to get some paving stones, the guy was about to tell me I had something wrong with my Jeep because it was knocking so bad - then he walked around the back and saw my "DIESEL" decal under the CRD Limited... |

Yeah, once while at the pump I had a guy behind me in a Dodge truck with the Cummins yell "Hey that's diesel you know!". I just smiled at him. |

In Oregon it's against the law to pump your own gas? What is the thinking behind that, and do you have to pay "full service" prices? -mark |

I've had to remind the same guy twice at my station that I want diesel, he keeps popping the "green" cap off the tank than grapping the "black" hose. |

Sounds like North-Carolina is the place to pump diesel. I can't imagine a state where you have to have an attendant pump your fuel Having the large nozzle inlet thingy is great but the flow is too great and the pump handle keeps kicking off. When it is set on the first lever a fill-up is real quick. Luck, TP |

-mark Well, the law has been around since like the 30's. It was originally put in place to prevent fires - I think the actual codes were instituted by the Fire Marshalls. (Portland has a rich and vivid Fire Department history - so they were pretty advanced with fire codes)... But when pumps were finally made "safe" for the common man, they just kept the law on the books. Some people don't like it, some people do. I personally don't really care. It is nice in bad weather, but bad when you are in a hurry.... As far as prices - opponents claim it raises prices. I have not found that to be true. And here is why: Prices in Portland tend to be a few cents higher than across the border in Vancouver, Washington. Opponents claim this is because the pump law. I don't think so because not only are taxes different, but if you shop around it is possible to get prices in Portland lower than in Vancouver. In fact, prices around Portland tend to vary drastically based on neighborhood. I once found prices as varied as 30 cents a gallon - at the same company (Chevron). Additionally, when you leave Portland gas prices drop as well - for instance in Sandy, Oregon just east of the city prices are usually 10 to 20 cents cheaper, and they have to pump the gas there too... And then the prices in Seattle are higher than Oregon's. So I think price is just an easy target... Of course, you don't actually get "full service". They just pump for you. Thats it. Motorcycles are exempt from the law, as of 2001. And they usually let me pump in my boat. To use the "cardlock" pump I had to be "trained" (read a pamphlet) - and only am allowed to pump Diesel. Gasoline is too flammable (according to the law). |

And nobody thinks that this is just a ploy to employ the otherwise unemployable? Speaking of pumps... has anyone here had a problem w/ the big nozzles that big-rigs use? When I was in Vermont, I ran across a couple of pumps that this was the only option for diesel. It sucked... I had to trickle 18 gallons into my Jeep b/c of the silly restrictor in the tank. Anyone been successful in removing this? Thx.. - Jeff |

I had to try it and went out the interstate to find a large nozzel pump today. I had no problem fueling. The nozzel was much bigger than what I'm use to but it fit in the fuel hole. Tight squeeze. I'm wondering if they enlarged the hole on latter models?? |

I had some guy in his Blazer staring at me yesterday in disbelief. He was shaking his head disaprovingly like I was putting in the wrong gas. I just smiled and nodded my head and said, "HELL YA IT'S A DIESEL!" I was thinking about having a windshield banner made up that says that. |

Had my first shutoff today. I went to the diesel pump turned it on pulled the trigger and nothing happened. I thought it must be pay before you pump as the diesel pump didn't have a credit card slot like the gas pumps did. I walked into the store and the clerk said he shut it off when he saw me trying to put diesel in the car. He turned it on when I told him it was the new diesel engine. He was very nice, was just looking out for his customers trying to protect us from ourselves. I guess I am now in the fuel pump shut off club. |
