For the last 5 years I have been driving around with the lit CEL glaring at me. I have a scanner so I knew what the codes were, a couple glow plugs and of course the EGR valve. But it is time to sell as we are now empty nesters and don't need a four door SUV anymore. So I figured I would have to finally fix the issues.
Getting the battery, fuel filter assembly, charge hose, FCV, intake elbow, alternator bracket, various hoses and wires out of the way made it a PITA job rather than a knuckle-busting, blue streak cursing misery. The intake elbow, EGR and pipe joining them were choked with CRD Goo. The EGR valve was stuck shut with the goo. Various improvised scrapers (table knife), a couple cans of carb and brake cleaner and a pile of rags got everything cleaned up. I also cleaned the charge hoses and they showed no signs of deterioration. VIP tools for this job are hose pliers, a mirror and a strong flashlight.
With everything removed the glow plugs were easy. I installed one new ceramic I have had for a couple years and one Etechno. It started right up, I cleared the old codes and the CEL went out and stayed out.
So now it is ready to sell. Check it out in the Trading Post, '05 Limited with 76,000 miles.
Look Ma, no CEL!!
