Hello all. The CRD has been dying randomly again lately. I had the same issue before and it was cured with a new crank position sensor. It worked for about 5 months. My question is why would the sensor just fail all of the sudden? It seems like as soon as the engine gets up to temp it just dies. Let it cool down for a couple minutes and it fires right up. My guess is that the "new" sensor was built poorly or something. Any thoughts? |

It happens, sadly. You might double-check the heat shielding in case radiant heat from the turbo down pipe or exhaust header are making things worse... |

Just changed my CPS/ESS (Crank Position Sensor/Engine Speed Sensor-it can be called either) so as to avoid any problems with sudden shut off. I do have a couple of questions: 1) Was the part sourced from the dealer or aftermarket? Especially if it is tough to get to, e.g. this ESS/CPS sensor, I always go OE. 2) As is suggested by msilbernagel, is all of the heat shielding in place? 1 to 2 shields get removed depending on how one goes about the task-from up top anyways. I don't know how easy this sensor is to locate from underneath. At least one (1) of the heat shields (the one that covers this sensor) must be removed to gain access regardless. And if it is removed, then it must be replaced. It is entirely possible to have a bad part right out of the box, the percentage should be very, very low however. Hope this helps. FWIW, Hoosier CRD |

The sensor was bought at the Jeep dealer. The heat shielding is all in place. I replaced the sensor from underneath, so I only had to remove the one heat shield, and I did put it back on after I replaced the sensor. Thanks for the suggestions! |

Question thinking ahead for the future. When the CPS goes bad, does it trigger a CEL? |
