I looked on the forum and saw several posting that confirmed that the decoupler pulley is right hand threaded. Can I get additional confirmation of that as I have now had the center part of the miller special tool split as a result of trying to get the pulley to break loose. I cannot believe that that bolt is that tight that it wouldn't have broken loose before breaking the tool. -PL |

It is indeed righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. If it was the opposite, the normal turning of the belt would try to unscrew it. |

It is a right hand thread and it can be tightly on. I also tried the recommended tool with a home made setup and shattered a 1/4" socket. After that, I switched to using an impact wrench (the decoupler I had had a 17 mm hex), so I made up a hex driver from a 17mm impact socket and a piece of a 17mm wrench--that removed it easily. |

If you are holding the center shaft (the 10mm socket) in a fixed position, then the 17mm outer pulley unscrews counter-clockwise (Lefty-loosey) just like any other bolt. Yea, it might take a LOT of force, but if both your tools are pointing up (ratchets) then you want to pull: The center shaft ratchet AWAY from the center of the engine. The pulley 17mm ratchet toward the center of the engine. If you have already destroyed the tool (SADNESS!) then I would suggest removing the entire alternator and replacing the whole thing at AutoZone for $150 with a lifetime warranty. It will come with the correct clutch pulley installed. |

I feel your pain. I couldn't get mine loose either this weekend. I even had it off and let penetrating oil soak in there for 4 hours while I was changing out the glow plugs and other things. I'll probably go the rebuilt route soon myself. I didn't break the special tool, but the hex of the pulley is now rounded pretty good. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 |
