Stumbled upon a CRD locally on craigslist. Going to test drive tomorrow. Only thing that worries me is it has hooks in the front to be towed behind an RV w/ all four on the floor. I'm assuming the hubs stayed unlocked, saving the 4wd... The auto slush box on the other hand.... Im assuming could have heat damage unless they ripped out the drive shaft before towing. Thoughts?

Flattows fine. There are no hubs to unlock. The proper way to flattow a 4x4 liberty (CRD or Gas) is:
Transmission in Park
Transfer Case in Neutral

Mine was flattowed by the former owner and I've towed my CRD behind my RV a little also. Tows great.

Do stop and check it after a mile or two, and again after 10 miles, to be sure nothing odd has happened with the transfer case. Something was wrong with mine, and it re-engaged itself while being towed and killed both the case and the Trans. The mechanic found broken gear teeth in the transfer case, not sure if that happened before or after the failure, maybe months before.

Thanks folks. Another question. I'm not familiar with these vehicles at all... would the odometer increase while being towed with the t-case in neutral?

No it will not. The odometer reads from an electronic sensor on the transmission, and it is only powered up when the computer is. There is an extra key "stopping point" on Jeeps in between "key insert/removal" and "key on" where the steering is unlocked but the computer is off. You MUST tow with it in this position, or the steering wheel will lock and damage the column when you make a turn. The wheels must track freely with the towing vehicle.

I keep a tie down strap under the driver seat to tie the steering wheel, you have the key in to allow the wheel to turn but if you leave it willie nillie, the wheel will get momentum and turn all the way during a sharp turn and wont go straight. Tie the wheel off at one point and there is still enough play for the wheel to turn some degrees but not enough to turn all the way.

In well over 20k miles of towing both a Grand Cherokee and my CRD, I have never had this problem or heard about it being a problem from anyone that pulls a Jeep with a motorhome. The tires will straighten out, even on the sharpest turn they shouldn't ever turn more than 1/2 way to lock anyway. By restricting the steering wheel's movement (which has a gear reduction on it) you are forcing the wheels to stay almost straight and scrubbing your tires. Don't forget that the steering wheel rotates 2.5 full turns from lock-to-lock, which translates to about a 40 degree shift in wheel direction. 900 degrees of turn to induce 40 degrees of turn. Let your tires travel where they want, they will straighten out again, every time.

For the '05 KJ's the speedo/odo is operated of the rear diff speed sensor,in the '06 it uses the ABS wheel speed sensors.Nothing in the trans has anything to do with the speedo/odo.

Alos your issue with your towing was you left the trans in "N" and not "P",I remember your long post about awhile back(now you'll dig it up and edit it to state differently now).

There is nothing to "dig up and edit" because I do not need to resort to false accusations to try and start fights. That is what you do, troll.

You want to bring up how I had the transmission placed yet again, like it has some bearing on anything, yet you continue to ignore the question that I have asked you multiple times: when the problem originated in the TRANSFER CASE WHICH RE-ENGAGED ITSELF AT SPEED... What possible difference would it have made whether the transmission was in park or in neutral? The incoming force suddenly being applied would overcome the parking pin and the end result would be the same thing: the transfer case was broken, and the transmission was destroyed as a result.

Go troll somewhere else, moron, or man up and answer my question. You won't, because you are a troll.
