Hi guys great forum.
Been doing a lot of reading the last couple of days and some of the mods you guys have done make a lot of sense. Now I'm about to do the glow plugs and was wondering if I should block the egr whilst down there? Would this set off the engine management light? I read somewhere on here exported models don't throw a code if the egr is blocked but the maf does if i disconnect it Is this true? Also if I disconnect the maf sensor to experience the difference it makes not having the egr working it will put the light on will the light go out by itself after I reconnect it or does it need plugging in? An engine on light over here is an MOT failure (ministry of transport road worthiness test every 12months). I appreciate any help with these questions and thank you in advance
Regards
Jay

It probably would help to know what model year CRD you have and whether it's the 2.5 or 2.8L engine

Check what glow plugs you have fitted at the moment. The early export 2.5 and 2.8 up until about the end of 2004 I think used 11 volt plugs with no plug controller, no MAF and only two fat relays feeding 12 volts direct to the plugs with no error checking.

The later models...with variable vane turbos and probably what you have as you have a MAF....use 7 volt glow plugs with a plug controller and now picks up faulty plugs.

If you cannot get these 7 volt plugs the dealer can supply you with the new 5 volt plugs which also require a new plug controller and a re-programming of the ECU before the new plugs are fitted.

If you cannot get the older 7 volt plugs (ceramic) then look on this forum for the Italian Ecotech 7 volt metal plugs which have had good reviews so far. :)

I'm assuming you have a post april 2005. if you have, then the glow plugs are likely to be 7v ceramic, in which case I gather that the Etechno will fit right in without any need for a mod or for an ECU reflash - but I'd check with the manufacturer just to be sure. I wouldn't disconnect the MAF sensor - all sorts of difficulties can arise and you will get a check light and code.

As for disconnecting the EGR, some of the lads on ausjeep have tried this - have a look here for the thread:
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/sho ... p?t=113434

You have to block it off at both ends, and there do seem to be benefits, but I'm not sure of the effect on the MoT gas readings.

As you have the 2005 - have you had the rear LCAs replaced under the recall? If not, get it done. Doesn't cost anything, and makes a difference to the handling.

Has the fuel filter been changed yet? I think its suggested at every other service, but no harm slotting a new one in just to be sure!

Where are you by the way?

Hmm will have to take one out and check there is a sticker on the cambelt cover stating 7 v ceramic plugs fitted! But after doing some fishing for plugs on the net a firm wanted to sell me metal plugs with a Bosch relay! I did a bit of poking around the engine bay and came across the exact same relay so I'm kinda hoping the ceramic plugs are gone and metal ones are already in. Having trouble finding the service history to see if they where done before my ownership? Hope so!
Any ideas about the EGR throwing codes if I block it? I read on here somewhere that export models don't?
Thanks

Hi lancer.
I'm in runcorn near Liverpool had the letter about the recall booked it in but something came up and cancelled I'll have to get it sorted? The only issue is jeep dealers are few and far between up here and the nearest is miles away oh well must sort it.
I was going to do the filter when I do the plugs got to take it off anyway might as well change it.
She's an 06 registered 55 plate so definitely post April. I'm kinda hoping the plugs have already been changed for metal ones don't fancy breaking a ceramic one and have to take the head off.

Personally, I'd be surprised if they have been changed. The Etecnos are pretty recent and I doubt if there's many in the UK who know about them, so I suspect you've still got the ceramics. Mine haven't gone out yet so I'm not too fussed right now :)

The rear LCA change takes less than an hour, I just brought a book and waited as it really wasn't worth while to even go for a stroll!
