Garrrr... new issue here, on two different CRD's we start the engine, put in to drive on mine, reverse on my friend's and it seems like the gear doesn't catch, is this a fluid level thing? or our transmissions going out? Filter/fluid change? Thank you all very much in advance! |

Well known, thoroughly documented, and widely discussed issue here. Look around a bit, you'll find lots of threads on it. Might be able to fix the issue, at least temporarily, by replace transmission fluid and replace tranny filter. |

Probably the ATF fluid drain back issue that's plagued DCJ transmissions since at least the 1s gen mini-vans, ask me how I know the date. Anyway if the problem only seems to occur on a cold (overnight or day of work) transmission then the diagnostic test I'm fond of is 1) crank up engine; 2) shift into neutral (not park as the FSM implies the ATF fluid pump works faster in neutral then park): 3) bring idle up to ca. 1200-1500 and hold for 10-15 seconds; and 4) then shift into gear and drive normally. In my experience the issue seems more obvious in drive than reverse but I've had the problem in both. If after you first try to shift into gear you get a no go or sluggish go immediately shift back into neutral and repeat above. If this technique makes the problem go away it's fluid drain back and the most common and generally successful fix is a tranny service with OEM or name brand (WIX for example) filters (both of them) and ATF+4 (Note - geordi if fond of adding a Lucas tranny product see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=69151&p=739813&hilit=+snot#p739813). FYI I drove with the "problem", using the above technique to be sure the fluid was pumped up, for about 20K miles (from the time I got my current CRD until SunCoast did the TC install) with zero issues. Subsequent to the TC install with new fluid/filter/transgo kit I've had no problem. |

Yep that's exactly what I did, shift to neutral, then park, drove away. So there's some sort of valve that's sticking open? Or the valve is in the filter? I'll be doing a filter/fluid change Saturday if I can manage all the parts by then... Sweet, Advanced has all the parts in stock, it's about 70 bucks for fluid and filters... hope I can get my decoupler and serpentine belt and get all this done at once. part numbers are: FK-319 Filter and Gasket FK-331 Supplemental Filter 06810 Fluid |

IIRC there is a valve in one of the filters but I forget which one. FYI WIX 58843 is a pkg with both filters and a pan gasket cost ca. $40 at O'Reilly's and if not in stock can get in 24 hrs. On fluid be darn sure you are getting "real" ATF+4 (http://www.centerforqa.com/licensedatf4brands.html) not some house brand that claims either unversal or ATF+4 compatable. Also consider a fan shroud mod to make future access easier if you have not already done so (viewtopic.php?f=98&t=64278&p=709322#p709322) |

Just got done putting my shroud back on. What a PITA doing the clutch since the shroud does NOT fit past the clutch. |

You can rev the engine up to 4k rpm in park and it won't pump any more than at idle. Rev it up to 4K rpm in nuetral and you will quickly hit the upper pump pressure. |

Well transmission fluid change went well and made it successfully from austin tx to Knoxville ar 645 miles on 25 gallons. Awesome. Very happy Put a new alternator pulley on there too . Using the impact wrench and taking the alternator off the truck makes things real easy! I just love be these jeeps! |

I think Dealership left my fluid level low after f37, bunch real idiots at this dealership not to mention shift cable fell off after one use oo and streched cable above tranny making crank sensor quit. How many quarts did you end up using me 7 quarts and think need to add little more! |
