Long time lurker, looking for a CRD mechanic. I am willing to drive if necessary. The local dealer decided I am completely insane and offered to do the timing belt service with water pump for only $2040 plus tax. My original plan was to get rid of it, but I don't trust the Excursion right now and I like the little jeep. I am active duty and underway a lot I can't get time off to do it. Anyone got suggestions?

I am in the same situation. Currently at 99,973 miles as I pulled into work today and I would like to get the timing belt done soon. I am thinking about doing it myself but I am not sure just yet. I might pull it into the auto skills shop here on Langley AFB and just rent one of their long term stalls and take my time swapping the belt out since they have ASE techs there that have been working on cars longer than I have been alive who can help out if needed. From what I have read and seen there is nothing too special about a CRD belt change you just have to take your time and pay attention to details. I dont know if I will be swapping out my water pump yet, the tools for keeping the cams in place are about $400.00 and on the detailed writeup I was reading the poster mentioned they can usually last to 200k miles. That and it looks like a massive pain in the booty lol When I do the belt I will be installing my lift (comes in on July 2nd!!) along with new tires unless I decide to do that as soon as it comes in since that seems to be an easy one day job if you have access to a lift where the timing belt I might spend 2 or 3. If you wanted to get together and try to help eachother install belts let me know I will probably be starting mine just after the 4th.

Richard

Minimum special tools for doing the TB without doing the water pump are the exhaust and intake cam pins (Miller VM.1053 and VM.1052 - some have fabricated a substitute from bolts but under no circumstances try to get by with allen wrenches as a substitute - I've posted pin dimensions at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=67007&p=737953&hilit=dimension#p737953); a 6mm allen wrench for a flywheel pin (see the 2005 FSM pg 9-243 for a how to use it - it's a good idea to "tap" around the hole in the flywheel to make sure you are putting the allen wrench in a smalll flywheel hole not one of the larger cutouts.); and a TB tensioner wrench (there is a Miller tool but you can make your own with a flat piece of metal and a couple of proper size bolts/nuts or use the allen key trick in the GDE timing belt change writeup at http://www.greendieselengineering.com/f ... st/72.page).

Take it slow, make lots of witness marks and you will be fine. Tedious but not hard. Physically hard part is getting fan and shroud off (see my comments at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=69251&p=740783&hilit=shroud#p740783) and consider a shroud mod to make future access easier (see viewtopic.php?f=98&t=64278&p=709322#p709322)

Good how to writeups are at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60858 (pulling all that front end stuff is not required but does make access easier) and http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html (ignore water pump steps)

My big problem is I've only been in my home port about 40 days this year. Time off is almost non-existent right now.

You might be able to cut a deal with geordi. It's a bit of a drive for him but he has suggested a willingness to consider doing so if the price is right and I know he knows how to do the job. Send him an email or PM
