I’ve got a bone-stock 05 CRD with 79,500 on the odo. Wifes daily driver. Aside from routine maintenance and cleaning the MAP every 7-10k or so, its been a very reliable and economical little beast. Until a very strange thing happened:

A week or two ago the wife said it was running rough. Figured it was just a bad tank of #2 so filled it up and it ran fine for me.

About 100 miles later, the CEL went on for wife but it was still running fine. Light went back off 10 miles later- cool I thought.

Then about 50 miles later it stalled at a stop sign for wife. Wife had an Neon years ago that would stall if the gas cap was loose so she checked that first (good wife) and found the locking fuel cap completely loose. Put it back on and it started right up. Now that was about 150+ miles into that tank, which I had filled up personally, so that was a head scratcher. Did I forget to tighten the cap? Maybe, but I doubt it.

So I figured maybe the bad or loose locking cap had caused the original CEL so I replaced the locking one with the original green factory fuel cap. I also cleaned the filler neck of some grunge build-up thinking maybe the cap wasn’t venting right.

Drove fine for another 50 miles and the CEL came back on. Disconnected the battery for 30 minutes and cleaned the MAP, but CEL still on.

It runs great now (as it usually does with a recent MAF cleaning) but the CEL is still on and it starts a little hard. So I pulled the codes with the key trick and got P410 which I guess is really P401…

So two questions – first, is the fuel cap thing just a coincidence and the EGR finally passed away? I can't see how they are related, but its suspicious to me anyway.

Second, is it just time for a GDE tune?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Took her to the grocery store tonight and the light was out. Put about 20 miles on it - just to be sure - and no light. A mystery, but as long as the light is out I'm happy.

but still thinking of getting ahold of GDE!

Some gasser cars like Audis and others have a function that sets of the CEL, but the CRD does not.
Used care dealers used to pick up Audis with the CEL on from the Auctions cheap. The bought a VAG Com from Ross Tech and shut off the light, cheap fix.

Best on the CRD to keep the fuel cap on tight so water can't run in during a hard rain or dust does not get in.
