Driving up to Northern Sask, my Jeep Libby CRD with 150 000 km is just humming along when I notice a sound of air behind the dash. After about 10 seconds, it would fade away. No noticeable loss of power or speed. Then it came back again and continued off and on for the last hour of my trip. I could feel a slight surge in the vehicle, but it may just be in my head. However, I did notice a puff of exaust timed with these surges. But again, no noticeable loss of power or speed.

Getting into town the power loss is VERY noticeable.. I cant get the engine over 1500 rpm with out the engine loosing power and the sound of air behind the dash becoming very audable. A very noticeable ploom of exuast is seen at that moment.

It feels like the turbo is trying to kick in, but then that power gets bypassed. I have flown aircraft with turbos before so I know what it feels like to loose a turbo, and have to say I don't think the turbo itself.

Took it to the local garage, but they are all booked up and no time to sneak me in until monday. The nearest Jeep Diesel shop is a 2.5 hour drive away at regular highway speeds.

Have serached the forums and come up with the hope that it is the solenoid. Is this the way to go? I am not much of a mechanic, but have enough resources around me to get help with it. Would this be a do it your self fix? Could anyone give me a link to where I could find out what needs to be done?

Is it also ok to limp around town with the Jeep in this condition or am I best to park it until I get it fixed?

Thanks in advance!

Ian

Sounds like a ripped CAC hose to me.

Remove CAC hoses and thoughroly inspect them for rips or cracks.

Pull back the mesh around the hoses to properly inspect them.

X2 and if you are already doing that also check the air intake hose that couples to the turbo known to split there as well quick easy checks maybe will solve you're problem.

Ok. Thanks for the ideas.

Is there a link to an engine diagram so I can find the items you have discribed and do the search? Again, not savy on where to go under the hood.

Thanks.

There are two hoses to look at, and it's probably the one closest to the turbo (no guarantee, tho). It goes from the turbo outlet to the 'radiator' (intercooler, for air, sandwiched with the coolant radiator). It has a woven mesh that covers it to protect from rubbing.

You can try inspecting without removing, but that's typically fruitless because of the mesh and the fact that the decay happens on the underside of the hose as the collected oil accelerates decay there. So, you pretty much have to pull the hose and look.

The other hose goes from the intercooler to the FCV at the intake, mid engine / driver's side.

Loosen the hose clamps with a screwdriver and take a peek.

One of those has torn and is leaking a lot of air - your boost - and your power.

Mark

Adanac - X3. Look at the 1st picture in Sir Sam's NOOB guide which shows 2 hoses to the left of the viscous heater label. The turbo to intercooler hose is the left most of those two hose that's covered with a mesh. The intercooler to engine (actually flow control valve) in on the exact opposite side of the intercooler (if you look very very closely at that picture you can just see a bit of that hose and its clamp in the extreme lower right corner of the picture).

As noted inspection must be done 1) off the vehicle and 2) without the mesh. You will likely have tear on the bottom on one of the hoses although you may only find mushy spots and some small hose. Be sure to manipulate the hoses don't just glance at them and yes your hands will get filthy dirty unless you use nitrile gloves. Any leaks will cause a significant loss of power because all or most of the turbo boost pressure is lost to atmosphere, not immediately harmfull though IIRC (some have used lots of like gorilla tape as a temporary repair with mixed success. The newer MOPAR hoses are supposed to be ok but the Samcos are better. Either way be sure that the hoses are not rubbing on anything (twist as needed to fix) and that the intercooler ends are pushed all the way on the mount. Those intercooler mounts are plastic so you want to make sure the hose clamp is fully on the mount before tightenig and don't godzilla the clamp (solid snug down and recheck in a couple of days) lest you crush the plastic.

Success! Thanks to everyone that posted. I pulled the first hose off from the intercooler on the left side of engine (passenger side) and found a split almost three inches long in it. So that seems to be the issue.

I took the part into NAPA, but they did not have one to match. Does anyone know the part number or where I could find it and is there anything specific to know with regards to brands?

Thanks again for all the help!

Ian

Go to the Noob guide for the part list, but you may be able to get home with tape for now. I bought the Samco hoses years ago and they are great, but I still had to wrap them in tape this summer because of rubbing on other engine bay items.

When this happened to me there were no replacements locally, and the hoses were so oily that no tape would stick to them. So I cut the hose straight across, at the midpoint of the rip, went to the hardware store and found a 45º PVC elbow that would fit inside the hose, used two hose clamps to hold the elbow inside the tube and put it together. Ran that until the Samco Sport silicone hoses came in the mail.

Most replace them with Mopar replacement parts, some upgrade to the samco's and other's just go off thier rocker like myself for a more permanent fix!

That PVC pipe and hose clamp trick sounds like a good temporary fix. Long term fix any Jeep dealer should be able to get you the upgraded MOPAR hoses which are supposed to be ok but if you want a for sure probably forever fix get Samcos from Boost Contoller (http://www.boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=328)

I used exhaust pipe and clamps to fix a section of torn CAC hose on my brother's turbocharged vehicle. It worked so well that we left it on when the replacement hose came in. He carries it in his trunk as a backup incase the temp fix fails.

I had a loud "whoosh" coming from my engine. It came and went like yours. You probably hear it most when you boost pressure is at its highest and your losing more turbo air. Mine seemed to be right around the firewall. I found it to be the cap had fallen off my EGR valve and I was losing all or most of my boost pressure out the EGR. Please see my post from today 7/12 about occluded intake. You may be able to reach up under the engine to feel if the cap is missing. Look a picture of an EGR. You will see the cap on the opposite end of the wire connection. It maybe your CAC hose but you can check this suggestion.
