Hello:
I'm new to LOSTJEEPS and have a 05 CRD. Just purchased a Provent; Samco hoses; V6 airbox. Is the SEGR still available? If so where, if not what are some recomended alternatives that maintain the benefits of the engine light? Would the GDE accomplish the same ?

Secondly, how does one accomplish cleaning or flushing the intercooler?

Thanks for the help.

Welcome :JEEPIN:
Have you read Sam's noob guide :jester:

Yes, I read Sam's Noob Guide and is where I discovered all of the CRD's less than favorable points. Up to that point I was fat, dumb and happy. The guide was very informative (thanks Sam) and led me to the recent purchases of Samco hoses and the Provent and the desire to bypass the EGR.

I'm still in the process of deciphering all of the shorthand used on the forum so I may not be speaking with all of the information I need to make myself clear. From reading the threads, it is not clear to me what the SEGR kit is and if it is still available for purchase or even if it is a purchased item. In some of the responses it appears to be a purchased kit and in others I'm led to believe it is a "jumpering out" or bypass of the EGR circuit done by the mechanic or owner. I understand the ORM and that it gets me to where I want to be, but I would like to maintain the the check engine light functional for other problems that it might detect.

Thanks any of you in advance for any help you provide.

There are several ways to disable or minimize the EGR without actual removal or plugging:
1. pull the MAF sensor, see picture on Sir Sam's NOOB guide, which shuts the EGR off but triggers a constant CEL (check engine light)
2. the SEGR which comes as either a you assemble group of parts or a built kit and IIRC runs ca. $100/200 respectively. It's an electronic black box that plugs into the circuit (no personal clue where) and fools the system into thinking the EGR is working when in fact it's totally shut off. Does so without triggering a CEL and can be removed if need be for areas that do diesel emission inspections.
3. various GDE ECU tunes which amoung other beneficial things for performance and mileage reduces EGR function of zero or near zero (GDE says they know of no one who has an EGR "failure" while running the tune) and I do know my oil stays a lot cleaner.

Some folk run bot 2 and 3 and some, like me, run just 3.

Thanks Papaindigo. As I said I'm still learning the shorthand. What is IIRC as this is where one can get the SEGR? Do you have an address or website? What is bot 2 and 3 that you speak of. Is my assumption that it is the stage of tune for the GDE ECU? What are the advantages or disadvantages of SEGR vs GDE ECU?

thanks.

IIRC = if I recall correctly.

I think the SEGRs are available but I don't have a link to the most recent forum chat on the topic, you will just have to look. The SEGR was a 1s generation attempt to deal with EGR problems and it's quite effective at doing so by simply shutting the EGR function down entirely without an illuminated check engine light. It's also not too expensive BUT its one and only function is turning the EGR off.

As far as I know demand for SEGRs dropped to not much once GDE (http://www.greendieselengineering.com/g ... ethod=home) developed the ability to tune the ECU (engine brain) to essentially achieve the same purpose. The GDE tunes (they have several depending on your needs and what if any drive train modifications you have made) cost more than the SEGR but they do a lot more (more horse power/torque and significant improvement in fuel economy). I'd suggest you review the GDE site for specifics and user comments.

I just got my GDE (Green Diesel Engineering){http://www.greendieselengineering.com} ECO tuned ECU back today, I'll let you know how it goes. I'm going outside now to clean out the MAP sensor with some non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner, then install the ECU and put the battery/etc. back in it.

That should clear my CEL unless I've still got the glow plug #3 ground fault, if so, I have a set of the Metal (Look in my signature) European 7v glow plugs to put in it tomorrow or Monday.

Fun Stuff!

I have to do the Timing Belt next, I may contract that out, still not sure...

sanuras,

For what it's worth, I have had the GDE Eco tune on a stock 05 for about 40k miles. I am very happy. The oil is cleaner, the fuel lasts longer, and the engine performs better. I have other needs right now (timing belt, torque converter) but I've not been in the shop for anything other than brakes since the F-37 recall at 30 k and my Jeep seems to be doing ok.

I would look into it.

Thanks Big Montana. Did you take your vehicle to GDE for the work or had it done otherwise. I'm in SEM and considering both options.

Keith gave me directions and I drove right to his house. It took a matter of moments with his laptop, and he answered several other questions had about the engine. He also let me ride in his CRD with the beefy turbo. Pretty cool ride.
