I changed the timing belt on my CRD and think I have the timing set properly. It runs normally as far as I can tell in the 50 mile I have driven it getting 25-27 mpg as same as it did before. If it was off by 2 teeth I understand it would have been apparent when the pistons hit the valves.

My question is how bad it would run if it was off one tooth. Even with the cams locked with the pins the intake cam had a little play in it.

From the posts that have had that issue - it sounded like the engine would run, but run rough.

properly set - it should be pretty smooth (as 4 cylinders go)

Hope you remembered to back the crank slightly counter clockwise to grap the belt tooth as it comes down from the injection pump sprocket, this allow a proper grab and no slack in the belt between the injection pump and crank - this is usually where people mess up. Not doing that will put you one tooth out of time. Marking all the sprockets, and the old belt with dots of paint help with the alignment (transfer the old belt paint dots to the new belt and then align with the sprockets).

Just a note of caution, it is not OK to turn the engine counter clockwise as a general practice but it is ok to nudge it slightly CCW to get the crank sprocket to grab the belt with the right tension.
